Over the past few years, we have received several requests to delete threads and indeed to delete members' entire records, including their posts, and we thought it would be sensible to articulate a position on this to give people some guidance on the subject.

Firstly, if there are particularly exigent circumstances why a member would need posts/threads or their member profile/posts deleted (if, for example, you have explicitly identified yourself), please do by all means get in touch with one of the mods.

However, that said, the general policy is that we prefer not to delete things. The reason for this is that posting on the CBB is not like, for example, posting on your own blog. Threads are conversations between various members, and when you start deleting posts - especially a member's entire contribution - these conversations can start getting very confusing! It's not really fair to the rest of the board. (Additionally, on a pragmatic note, even where posts are deleted, archived threads remain; likewise any time one of those posts was quoted by someone else.)

We would also ask that users do not try to circumvent this by editing their own posts to delete the content, for essentially the same reasons.

Obviously, all this is subject to common sense! If you post something that you later decide is ill-considered, or accidentally post personal information, or any one of several reasons, you can edit your posts (if appropriate, leaving an "edited to..." remark). If you're not sure, please PM a mod for guidance.

This seems to still be happening with growing frequency. Just to let you know that we are deciding on the best way to approach this, which could include reinstatement of posts from the Moderators' log or some kind of sanction for frequent naughty people.
