I would be very grateful for any information anyone can give me about siblings--especially sisters--of Chalet School mistresses.

I know about a few people's (Hilda's, Nell's, Con's, Ivy Norman's...) but anything you can think of about anyone else's would be incredibly useful. :)

Gill Culver is same person as Arminel Chudleigh so has 7 siblings, she's the youngest girl. The girls are Merle (Merrill), Cherry (Charlotte) and Venancy. The boys are Godfrey, Charles, Hawk (Peregrine) and Ben (think he's Benedict not Benjamin)

Frau Anna Mieders has a younger sister Lieserl Kalkmann

Davida and Cicely Armitage, both teachers, are cousins.

Matey's sister is Lilian, older I think.

Nancy Wilmot has an older sister Hilda

Simone's sister is Renee

(edited to correct typos)

Hilary Burn's sister is Marjorie

(not sure if they all work for you if you have someone who is both pupil and teacher in the series!)

Miss Stewart has a sister, Nancy, who was at school with Lydia Maynard, and a brother who is a doctor.

Miss Maynard, of course.

Matron Wilson (matron before the infamous Matron Webb) had a brother who was widowed.

Miss Wilson has a younger sister who died.

Miss Annersley had at least two older brothers.

Miss Phipps had a brother she later kept house for.

Frau Mieders had a younger sister, Lieserl Kalkmann, who followed her to England.

Miss Norman had younger brothers Geoffrey (attended Oxford), Alec, who she was educating, and a sister who was a secretary to a bank manager and later married.

Miss Moore had a brother whose two sons she was helping educate.

Matey had a sister, Lilian, who died in the Swiss era. Lilian had a husband, two children, and grandchildren.

Mlle Lachenais was the eldest of seven in a poor family.

Hilary Burn had a younger sister Marjorie.

Mary, Kitty and Peggy Burnett.

Rosalie Dene had two much younger stepbrtohers, Peter and Robin.

Simone and Renee Lecoutier.

Gillian and Joyce Linton.

Hilda and Nancy Wilmot.

Biddy O'Ryan had a younger half-brother, who was taken in by her stepfather's sister.

Gillian had elder siblings Godfrey, Merle, Cherry & Charles (twins), Hawk (Peregrine) and Venancy, and younger brother Ben.

Wow! I learned quite a lot there, thanks!

In Kenya, Nancy Wilmot talks about growing up "among a horde of brothers" when using a rope to make a lasso to save Emerence's life. So not just a sister!

Hilda A must have had three brothers, as she mentions her eldest brother coming to collect her when her mother dies.

Thanks for the information, everyone! It's incredibly helpful, especially that about Lieserl Kalkmann, though I am disappointed to find that people mostly had brothers. :(

Mary, could you explain why the reference to Hilda's eldest brother makes you infer she has three brothers? I'm curious, because I've always taken that to mean she has at least two, but not necessarily as many as three. :)

If there were two brothers, then one would be the elder brother and one the younger - a simple comparative between the two is all that's needed to describe their relative positions in the family. If there are more than two, you need to use the superlative - eldest, youngest - to describe them because if there is an eldest and youngest there must be at least one in the middle.

Ah, that's fascinating to see how referring to family members has changed over time! Personally I would only use the phrase "my younger brother" to describe "my brother who is younger than me," not to refer to "the youngest of my brothers" whether they were older or younger. By that token, to me "my eldest brother" means "my brother who is older than my other brother(s)", ergo the minimum number of brothers it can reference is two.
If that makes sense! It's kind of complicated to describe.

It is a bit complicated. I'm glad I only had one of each.

I'd also take "younger brother" to mean "brother who is younger than me" ... but I haven't got a clue how I'd refer to the younger of two elder brothers :? .

My little brother is 6 inches taller than I - but he's still little because he's younger!

What about the elder of two younger brothers?

I'm lucky - all I have is a little sister (who is taller than me and sadly has bigger feet).

I wrote a very complicated answer to this and then thought: "This is my elder brother. I am the oldest in the family" makes the situation quite clear!

(Although you could have any number of sisters)

I'll have to ask my mother - she has two younger brothers and one older brother... :?

I have two younger brothers, whom I tend to refer to as my younger brother and my baby brother. It was the latter's 52nd birthday yesterday!

They are respectively 5 and nearly 8 years younger than me. Both are taller than me, but that's not difficult as I've never reached the dizzy heights of 5 feet. :D

I have also have one older sister, so, if asked, I say I'm the second of four children.

Sorry, I hadn't meant to lob a hand grenade into the middle of the discussion. Put it down to my pedantic nature where grammar is concerned.

No need to apologise, Mary; I actually found it a very interesting tangent. And it's given me something new to think about where Hilda is concerned, which is always nice. Though I can't quite picture a third Annersley brother... I'm going to have to ponder this for a bit.
