Just a quick question - does anybody know what Herr and Frau Mensch's first names were? I know Joey calls him "Onkel Riesen", but can't find what she is. I am thinking Gretchen, but could well be wrong. Anybody know?

Pretty sure Frau Mensch is Gretchen. I can't remember which book it's in, but Jo at one point refers to 'Onkle Riese and Tante Gretchen'. Also Gretchen von Ahlen is named after her granny (and Madge). Don't think Herr Mensch's real name is ever mentioned though. Maybe one of Bernhilda or Frieda's sons had his name, and it was just never mentioned? They seem quite partial in CS Land to naming children after relatives and friends. And Jo, of course.

She is Gretchen. This is from Eustacia:

‘You have Frieda still,’ said Madge to him, later. ‘You will have her for some years yet, Onkel Reise. And Gottfried and Gisela are not far distant. And think of the pleasure you and dear Tante Gretchen will have in going to visit Bernhilda in Lyons.’

She's definitely Gretchen: Joey calls her "Tante Gretchen" in one of the mid Tyrol books.

I don't think we're ever told what his proper first name was. I guessed at Stefan for a drabble once, because that was the name given to his first grandson and CS people are very into family names (although it could just as easily have been a von Eschenau name), but we're never actually told.

ETA - is it me, or is it a bit weird that Madge calls the senior Mensches "Tante" and "Onkel"? She also refers to Herr Marani as "Onkel Florian" in Exile. Joey calling them "Tante" and "Onkel" is reasonable enough, but it seems a bit strange that Madge, who was 24 when she met them, did the same  .

I was just going to post the same thing, Alison. And why on earth would Madge call Herr Mensch Onkel Riese? Surely she would have used his real name, rather than a silly affectionate nickname given to him by the children?

It's in fact extremely unlikely that she would, in real life, have called them anything other than Herr und Frau Mensch/Marani even if they were calling her by her first name. Which is almost as unlikely although I know that Frau Mensch does suggest being less formal whilst the Bettanys are staying with them at Christmas.

Austrians and Germans of that generation (and even far later, almost to the present day) were formal in the extreme. If the man had a profession, engineer perhaps, or doctor, he would be addressed as Herr Doktor Sowiewas (so and so) and by virtue of marriage to him, his wife would be Frau Doktor Sowiewas.

EBD got this one very wrong indeed...

I have a note that we're told in New House that Bernhilda & Kurt's son Stefan is named after him - sorry, haven't got time to check ATM.

Yes, in New House it says

Quote:
Bernhilda has named him after his two grandpapas, so he is Stefan Kurt

So, Stefan Mensch and Kurt von Escheneau.

Thanks, everyone! I thought she was Gretchen, but couldn't find the reference.
