Hello! :D

Name: Boardname Grizonne: a combo of Grizel, one of my favourite characters, and Con (Maynard), the character I am probably most like. Real name Liz.

Age (ish!): 20

Location (approximate - no actual address, please!): Normally I live in the north-west of England but I am currently in Perpignan, France, on my university year abroad

SLOCs/children/pets/imaginary friends: Had a cat but he died recently. At my home in France there are two cats. I write a lot of fiction so I guess you could call my characters imaginary friends.

Favourite and least favourite books and characters:

Favourite books: New House and Reunion are my absolute favourites. Others that I really like include Jo of, Rivals, Exploits, Gay and Carola. Least favourite: There are none I really dislike, but books that don't really excite me are Peggy, Shocks (although I like Emerence) and Mary-Lou Of.

My favourite characters are Grizel, Robin, and Simone, and Jack, Con and Margot Maynard, and I have a love-hate relationship with Joey. I also have a soft spot for Sybil as I think she gets a lot of unnecessary grief from EBD. Least favourite characters: Jack Lambert has to be my least-favourite. I'm not fond of Mary-Lou while at school but I think she improves when she leaves. I'm also not a massive Jem fan though I wouldn't say I really dislike him.

How you got into the Chalet School: When I was about thirteen I was at a giveaway of old books from my school library and a teacher, Miss C (thank you if you're reading this!) encouraged me to take a two-in-one of Rivals and Eustacia. I read the title as "Chapel School" and thought it would be super-religious. I started reading it and was amazed at how nice everyone seemed to be compared with the fighting and gossiping of certain Blyton school stories, which were all I read in the genre up to that point.

After that there was a gap of about four years in which I was interested in the Chalet School but didn't really do anything about it. Then, when I had just started university, I went on a Uni trip to Beijing. When I unpacked my bag I found two two-in-one Chalets from my family: the first two books, and Trials/Theo. I read them and got straight back into the series, and have been collecting ever since.

How you found the CBB: Stumbled upon it all those years ago when I read that first book and recently rediscovered it.

I look forward to getting to know you all and discussing all things Chalet! :)

Bonjour Grizonne, and good to meet you - you'll find plenty of other folk on the board who like to write, and plenty to join in with, too. Have fun!

Thank you, Lesley and Cal. I am currently in Perpignan, near the Spanish border, where I am working as an English Language Assistant.

Oh I love the mishearing. Cue stories about the Chapel School :D

Welcome to the Board Grizonne. I am so glad someone is fond of Grizel; I think she has a very tough time in the series....

Thanks Cestina! :) I think the thing about Grizel is that because she doesn't seem to have been EBD's favourite character, she escaped being moulded into some perfect person (unlike, say, Joey, ML, Len) and remained realistic. Also she is one of few characters mentioned as having brown hair, which I have, so I think that drew me to her. All the others seem to have more dramatic colours like black, red and "sylphine fair"!

I never noticed "Sylphine fair". Am left wondering precisely what that is. No one ever told me sylphs were particularly fair....

Peggy is certainly sylphine fair if I remember correctly and possibly Verity too. The way I always read it wasn't that she was like a sylph, so to speak, but just that her hair was like something from mythology rather than human or from our world. I can understand as I have a cousin whose hair is so amazingly fair it seems like it should belong to an elf or someone from a legend. That being said, our family is mainly dark which is why it stands out. Peggy's father is blond so I don't know why such a drama is always made over her hair!

Welcome to the CBB! I'm a great fan of Grizel; I think she's one of EBD's most interesting characters.
