Hello! I've been lurking here without a profile for a while since I discovered the SDL in the summer, but since I've starting posting quite a bit of fic there and love the friendly atmosphere I've seen on here, I thought I'd get myself registered and tiptoe shyly in at the back.

Name: Rietta (though I will also answer to Henrietta, Hen or Ria)

Age (ish!): 25(ish!)

Location: Yorkshire

SLOCs/children/pets/imaginary friends: No SLOC at present, though my dog Honey is very comforting. Children, I see enough of at work. Imaginary friends? Well, there's always a character or twenty hanging around in my mind, whether from my original fiction or a favourite fandom.

Favourite and least favourite books and characters: Hilda Annersley all the way! Am enormously fond of Nell Wilson too. (Mmmm, sarcasm...) As a child, Mollie Maynard was always my favourite--the staff have always interested me more than the girls. Rosalie Dene is another favourite. As for least favourite characters, I've never really thought about that. I'm not a huge fan of adult Grizel, though I love her in Head Girl.
Books, then? Growing up it was always Exile, mainly because of Joey's SLOC moment. (What can I say--I've always been a hopeless romantic!) Now, I'd probably chose Exploits, which has all the necessary ingredients: sweet Hilda/Nell moments, Evvy and Corney mischief, the Tiernsee, and a fun staff party. And I will always have a soft spot for Gay, because Nell talking about her love for Hilda is my favourite CS moment of all time. I recently acquired the hardback (my first unabridged CS book!) and the one extra sentence at the end of that speech makes me tear up every single time.

How you got into the Chalet School: My mother owned some of the books, which she passed on to me along with her Enid Blytons when I was about seven, so I grew up constantly re-reading the twelve or so titles she owned. (Fortunately they were some of the best ones!) Funnily enough, although I'd filled in some of the Blyton gaps in my bookshelf by that time, it wasn't until I was at university that it occurred to me I could use ebay to find the rest of the Chalet books. It was also at this time, when I mentioned in passing buying a few more titles, that I discovered my aunt had owned the entire series my whole life! I instantly forgave her for hiding this from me when she offered to lend me all the ones I hadn't read. That's when I got truly hooked.
(Now I'm sorry, but my inner Nell is dying to answer this question, "I scraped through the entrance exams"...)

How you found the CBB: Through the SDL, which I found through AO3 when I was looking for CS fanfic when I ran out of actual CS books on holiday this summer. *takes deep breath* That sentence got away from me rather...

So, that's me. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all when I get up the nerve to leap into discussions. :)

Hi Rietta, and welcome! Hope we will see you joining in - I always think it's disappointing when a new member arrives and we hear no more from them.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I certainly intend to stick around and join in.
I'm really happy you've enjoyed my drabbles Janet; thank you :D

Just a couple of newbie questions:
1) Is it considered bad etiquette to revive threads that are years old? During my lurking I've read some great discussions on things I'd be interested in commenting on, but I don't want to break any unwritten rules by doing so. Reviving years-old threads was rather frowned upon on another forum I used to be a member of years ago, so I just wanted to check first.

2) How do the avatars work? Is the collection there for anyone to choose from, or do specific ones belong to specific people?

Hi Rietta!

Congratulations on de-lurking.

You may choose any avatar you like from the gallery. Sometimes it gets a bit confusing when two people have the same one, but there aren't enough for a different avatar for everybody.

I can't see any problem with reviving old threads - if they haven't been locked they're fair game.

Welcome Rietta. Have fun and do join in the discussions and games as much as you like.

It's always interesting to read different viewpoints, although I have to admit I rarely comment on the book-related topics myself. :D

Most of it in turn  Grew up in West, went to uni in South, now live in North. I'd probably count myself a North Yorkshire girl.

Thanks for the welcome, tartan-belle and Mary! :)

Hurrah; up with North Yorkshire! I'm from York, which is technically not part of North Yorkshire but a unitary authority, but it's inside N Yorks, so whatever. :D
