Hello! I've been enjoying dipping into your threads, and most recently found one where a link was given to A.L.O.E.'s The Crown of Success, famed as theme for a school Sale. Thank you all - the person who put up the link, and everyone else for such interesting reading throughout!

I am not learned in Chalet arcana, though I've read - oh, a good half-dozen, I'd say - so I probably won't be able to contribute much, but I thought I'd register so that at the least I could express my appreciation for everything here.

Hello and welcome, Housemate - and don't be put off by anyone else's knowledge. Obviously I can only speak for myself, but I certainly have to take the books off the shelves to check things!

Thank you again, everyone, for the lovely welcome!

And in reply to mynameisdumbnuts:

I think Headgirl of the Chalet School - for the wonderful description of the caves, and how it links fairytales/old legends to both reality and madness - the descriptions are really magical, I think. And there were some really powerful images in there - the Robin, asleep in the glittering cave, and the old man's desperate, entranced desire to return her to her proper place as Queen of the Fairies - I think there was a throne-like place?

The Princess of the Chalet School was good, too, though - though it was decades ago, some lines have stuck:
"An English princess? But there isn't one!"
"The people would have a fit if we wandered into [somewhere] in just our vests and knickers"

From the Headgirl:
"Death is just falling asleep to wake with God" - and also Joey being so scornful, calling Grizel's Basel trip "a mad thing to do".
Oh, and "But harmony, Grizel?" [ie on a Sunday]

By the way - there was an English princess at the time, wasn't there? The present Queen?

Only just - she was born in 1926; book published 1927 - so she wouldn't have been old enough to come to school, and the then Princess Royal [Princess Mary] was an adult, so I think it means there wasn't one of the right age to attend the CS.
