I am not sure if this has been flagged up already but a friend in the TV world has just told me that a 13 part drama series based on the Malory Towers books is currently being made, for release later this year.

Nor am I sure whether my post fits into the "Recommendations" thread because who knows how it will turn out? The rugs on the dormitory floor in the picture lead me to think that it may not be that close to a 1940s feel as the producers think. Rugs on the floor??? Bare boards in the 1950s...!!

There are plenty of other articles on line if you google for it...

It says CBBC, which is aimed at primary school children - although I suppose most of us first read Malory Towers as primary school children, so fair enough!

I think it said 6 to 12 year olds in one of the articles...I thought 6 might be a bit young actually...

That's CBBC's target audience, so I'm not sure what they'll do with it - I'm not sure that some of it'll really work for 6-year-olds, as you say. There used to be things like Grange Hill and Byker Grove which were aimed at older children, but they seem to have died a death. Oh well, we shall see :D .

Some of us have still not gotten over the cancellation of Grange Hill.

In today's Guardian is the news that the Malory Towers series has been brought forward to next Monday to console children for the early ending of the academic year.

Edited to add link to post

My granddaughter sent me the link last night - must admit the style of those dresses*and* of the shoes reminded me of my own schooldays! I know it's aimed at the 6-12 age group, but I'm sure it will also have adult appeal, if only nostalgia! The shame is that we can't watch i-player TV programmes over here, though no problem with radio ones, I think it's to do with the technology. Now if some bright spark thinks to put the series on You-Tube.....

I don't think it's the technology Elder, it's the rules about not having a British TV licence. It drives me mad when I am in Czech Republic, given that I have always paid for a licence until they gave it to the over 75s for free.

But you can certainly get round it in Europe by signing up to a VPN. Don't know if that works in Canada though.

Radio doesn't need a licence, hence you can listen to your heart's content.

I'm quite excited about this. MT was definitely the series of my childhood.

That confused me as well - I thought at first that the American girl must be Sadie, and then remembered that Sadie was at St Clare's, not Malory Towers! There probably were a few American girls there, but making Alicia the American girl seemed odd, because there was always so much fuss about her mum having been at the school.

Thank you - that's who I was thinking of. I knew it wasn't Sadie, but couldn't think whom I meant instead! I think Enid Blyton got the name from Jesse James's wife  .

ETA - having watched a bit more of it, it's actually a brilliant touch! The reason they've included a Canadian girl (just realised she's Canadian, not American) is so that they can say she's getting food parcels from home, and that's how they get all the chocolate and other goodies for the midnight feasts, during rationing. Enid Blyton conveniently ignored that  , but gold star to the BBC for historical accuracy!

I've only watched the first episode, mixed feelings so far. I don't like the demonic matron but at least Gwen is a but more balanced and I do like the way they've done some of the other characters.

I found a VPN app that lets me watch this. I’m enjoying it.
It’s not a reproduction of the book, but a decent adaptation. The girl playing Mary-Lou is excellent; she captures the scaredy-cat, kind, surprisingly brave personality so well. Ms. Grayling is more present than I remember, but comes across well. Matron is scary and Ms. Potts seems less strict. Mlle Rougier is... different, and I miss Mlle DuPont

Are they planning to carry on for 6 years? It would be interesting to see how the series develops, but it may stray further from the source material.

I imagine it's also because the series is a co-production with a Canadian network, who may have insisted on it for their home audience (which doesn't take away from the fact that it does work well in the way you suggest.)

Three episodes in, I'm enjoying it.

Please, has anyone noticed which Canadian network is involved with this production? If we knew that, it would be easier to find out if/when we might see it on a TV channel here.

Thank you - I will keep a check on that; I never look at the programme schedules for that one.

I'm hoping to get a chance to watch some of this after the smallest Noor goes to bed tonight - the feedback so far seems generally positive, which is good.
