I agree that they both seem to have had the kind of 'large' personality that there isn't really room for more than one of in any circle.

Remembering the conversation between Harriet and Miss De Vine in Gaudy Night, about the importance of doing one's 'proper job', I think DLS would have acknowledged that writing school stories was EBD's 'proper job'.

EBD must have known of girls who 'got into trouble'. But she might have trouble reconciling it with DLS's reputation as a Christian scholar. (I expect much of DLS's theology would have gone over her head, as it goes over mine.)

DLS was very fortunate that no journalist ever found out about her son in her lifetime.

I've taken the DLS biography. I've read it before, so am skimming through, and came across this, quoted from a letter written by Dorothy in 1921, when she had a temporary teaching post:

Quote:
At 10 minutes to 12 precisely I shall proceed to mete out frightfulness in Upper IVA where it is badly needed.

CS mistresses might not have expressed it in quite that way, but the sentiment would have been familiar in the CS staffroom!

Or even more so Miss Cromwell at Kingscote!

Winifred Peck's Bewildering Cares is free on kindle at the moment. It's one of the ebooks being brought back from obscurity by the furrowed middlebrow blog. I have downloaded a few of the others already but haven't had a chance to read yet, but they seem to be getting good reviews.

I forget whether anyone here's into dystopias... this is a young adult one; quite enjoyable and free on kindle - no idea how long for https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00M0P6M1Y/ ... 4741_TE_DP

Not into dystopias but I'm still keeping an eye out for books written during WW1, or immediately post-war. Keeping the home fires burning, sort of thing; domestic details like rationing starting to bite, clothes expensive and hard to find. Standard GO stuff, really!

Just read and enjoyed Bewildering Cares and now starting Bramton Wick - which is slow to start but I'm warming to it! Both very Thirkellish in a lot of ways.

I am just reading Welcome to The Little School by the Sea by Jenny Colgan, the first of a series of six (only first two written so far) of tales of a boarding school written for adults.

The author first published the two under the name of Jane Beaton. She is a great fan of school stories, including the CS.

I have nearly finished Welcome to... which is currently 99pence on Kindle. I can't quite make up my mind about it...has anyone else read it?

I am enjoying it enough to take the second one when it drops within my price range.

And quite a lot of the second tranche, including E.Nesbit's The Lark, have dropped to £1.99 from the higher prices they started at. Beware though, there is some strange stuff going on, eg one of the Ursula Orange books is showing with two Kindle prices....

ETA One of the Elizabeth Fair's is doing the same double pricing...

I highly recommend Chelsea Concerto by the way.
