I got it about the same time and I'm sure I didn't pay for it.

I liked Arrest the Bishop and Bewildering Cares but my favourite Furrowed Middlebrow books are The Lark by Edith Nesbit; and The Mingham Air and Landscape in Sunlight, both by Elizabeth Fair though tbh I love all six of hers.

For anyone else who has also been reading Winifred Peck, this week Bewildering Cares appears to be free again.

(I must admit I much preferred Arrest the Bishop to the Warrielaw Jewel so I will be interested to see what this one is like, and of course it's not a whodunit either which should be interesting)

Not sure that this is the right place to post this but thanks to Abbey pointing out that Patricia Wentworth's Hue and Cry was free on Kindle, I am now reading and enjoying it.

The heroine, Mally Lee, is in a tight spot and is trying to goad herself into action - "Stop being an invertebrate jellyfish this instant" - she tells herself.

Hue and Cry was published in 1927 - did EBD adapt this phrase for Matey's use or was it vice versa? Was it a common phrase at the time?

The earliest reference I can find for "spineless jellyfish" with this meaning is 1911. It seems to have remained in use ever since - it still turns up in recent books and has an entry on "Urban Dictionary". It looks as though it was a not uncommon phrase in the 1920s.

Menna van Praag's Witches of Cambridge is at £2.79 at the moment. Over my limit but I couldn't resist it!

Sorry no link. Too fiddly on tablet!

I bought it but haven't got into it. Might try again.
Still reading my old Mary Stewart paperbacks, alternating with a re-read of Elizabeth Fair on my kindle. Wish she'd done a Thirkell and not stopped after six books, and not writing another one in the n ext forty years!

Margery Allingham's first detective novel, The White Cottage Mystery, is £2.39 on Kindle this month; not utterly cheap but cheaper!

The Secrets of Wishtide by Kate Saunders (author of Beswitched), about a Victorian lady detective, is currently £2.49... I haven't read any of them so can't vouch for their quality, though I quite enjoyed Beswitched!

And Alan Garner's The Weirdstone of Brisingamen is currently at 99p.

.

I had Wishtide from the library and found it disappointing. It's the first in the series but it reads more like the second or third because the lady detective has already begun detecting and has solved a case - possibly several. I don't know why she did it like this, it would have been more fun to begin with the heroine's first tentative footsteps. And the plot was a bit unsatisfying too.
I really wanted to like it because I like her romantic novels: The Marrying Game, and the Nesbit one as well, and she's had such a rotten deal: MS and the death of her teenage son, but this didn't do it for me.

I've just finished it; I had it as an e-book from the library. I quite enjoyed it, for the characters and setting rather than the plot. I like Laetitia, brother Fred and Mary Bentley. I agree with Sealpuppy that I'd have preferred to meet Laetitia at the start of her career.

I haven't read this before but Eva Ibbotson's Madensky Square is down to £2.99 just now. It's been on my wish list for a while now so I justified it to myself

Thanks right back Abbey. I haven't read Murder on the Orient Express in ages and it's nice to build up my Christie's on the Kindle.

Never hesitate when it comes to justifying something by Eva Ibbotson! Enjoy - I think this may be my favourite, probably because it was the first one by her that I read.

This forum really is tough on the wallet! I bought Madensky Square and then my eye was caught by Magic Flutes and as I can't resist a secret princess, I've bought that as well.

Really enjoyed Madensky Square, although quite different from her other books I have read.

Another Ibbotson, Journey to the River Sea is £1.19 just now.

Too late for the Heyers  but today there seems to be lots of Mary Stewarts for 99p.

I haven't read many of her works so will top up my collection.
