I knew there was a reason I waited to order it, sealpuppy. :D I had intended to buy it in paperback, but have now ordered the Kindle version. Do give your publishers a big thank you.

For those who enjoyed The House at the End of Hope Street, by Menna van Praag, there is another in today's deal - The Dress Shop of Dreams at 99pence.

There is a further one at 99pence, not in the Daily Deal, but from the reviews it is very different, and not much liked. However, for what it's worth, here it is!

Thank you! I have just bought "Dress Shop of Dreams"- I downloaded the sample last week and loved it, but couldn't justify it full price, so thank you for solving that dilemma :) I tried the beginning of Men, Money and Chocolate but disliked the premise that if you are overweight and single (like, uh, me...) you will most likely be unhappy (I am making a sweeping judgement based the first few pages, so please feel free to correct me)

Edit: typos

Glad to have helped Mrs Helston.

No, I agree with you about not liking the premise behind Men, Money and Chocolate. I didn't dig any further than the reviews so I don't know if there is a further assumption that one requires any or all of the things in the title for happiness, but if so, then I don't agree with that either!

I'm not sure that this will excite anyone other than me, but the John Jakes North and South trilogy, three of the greatest historical novels ever written, is on offer for £3.99 today

Thanks :) I've just finished The Frozen Lake (having purchased for 99p). I enjoyed it for the most part, but found the villains a bit too villainous and it got a bit dark for me...

I agree. But as I was reading I couldn't help thinking about that other frozen lake in the north, and I was so pleased to see that she'd thought of it too, and slipped in a reference.

Gosh, I gave in to temptation and bought a hardback of that years ago, and it definitely wasn't 99p! So good value for money, even if you don't get the photos.

I've taken the DLS biography. I've read it before, so am skimming through, and came across this, quoted from a letter written by Dorothy in 1921, when she had a temporary teaching post:

Quote:
At 10 minutes to 12 precisely I shall proceed to mete out frightfulness in Upper IVA where it is badly needed.

CS mistresses might not have expressed it in quite that way, but the sentiment would have been familiar in the CS staffroom!

I wonder how Dorothy and Elinor would have got on if they'd met? There was less than a year between them in age and they shared an interest in and love of music. Dorothy was better educated and all round more intellectual and academic in her interests, and of course really was fluent in several languages.

Was 'Whose body?' one of the book titles in one of the CS staff evening games once, or am I imagining it?
From the little I know of both ladies I really can't see them getting on - both a tad on the eccentric side so would probably irritate each other like mad. I can also imagine DLS thinking she's massively superior to a teacher and writer of school stories, and I suspect EBD might be a bit shocked at DLS's 'moral' behaviour and views (unless EBD got up to far more antics at the local dramatics group than we know about!)
