A few weeks ago I read 'Tubby of Maryland Manor' by Olive C. Dougan and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
It's about a girl whose nickname is 'Tubby', but who longs to be called by her real name, 'Lindsay'. She's fat and wants to be slim; she acts in a certain way as 'Tubby' but desperately wants to be a different person. Basically, the book's all about how she deals with these things and the effects that her efforts have on her and her friends. I honestly thought it was really well done, especially for the time. Plus, it has many of the traditional GO elements too
