Sunday afternoon, and too hot to do very much, so I thought I'd start a discussion.

What would be your one book if stranded on a desert island? Mine I think would be Gaudy Night, or possibly Persuasion, but Gaudy Night is longer.

I can't currently think of a non-fiction book I'd want, but feel free to nominate one fiction and one non-fiction.

(The Bible and Shakespeare are of course already provided.)

Proust. A Remembrance of Things Past.

Partly because it runs to so many volumes (is that cheating?) and partly because it's so complex there's a lot of reading in it.

If it had to be one physical book then Joyce's Finnegan's Wake. This is, I think, the hardest book I've ever read but there's lots of bits that are poetic or can be declaimed and, again, it's very complex.

I'm less certain about a non-fiction book. Possibly Wisden as that ticks a lot of boxes or Newton's Principia (because that would finally make me read it!)

Of course, the non-fiction book you'ld really want is "Sitting Pretty: The GO Book of How To Look Dainty While Surviving On A Desert Island and Building A Raft"
