If you haven't read this, then you will enjoy it. So many echoes of EBD and her writings, as well as fascinating in its own right.
www.warcomposers.co.uk/farrarbio.

Sorry can't do link!

Sorry, NanaG, can't make the link work - I think you need to remove the full stop at the end of the sentence, or at least leave a space at the end of the link. But, yes, that was very enjoyable :D

Correct link is: http://www.warcomposers.co.uk/farrar.html which then leads to http://www.warcomposers.co.uk/farrarbio.html

Another fascinating composer who was killed in WW1 was George Butterworth.

One Saturday afternoon, I was with fellow Councillors and guests as we were digging the holes for tree-planting to commemorate our being twinned with an Italian Town.

I looked over at another willow-laden spot on the river bank, and said it was a real George Butterworth moment. I was absolutely astonished when the two I was working with had no idea what I was talking about.

Silly me, I thought everyone knew 'The Banks of Green Willow'.

I had to retreat in confusion.

A certain edge when she spoke of Mrs Maynard, certainly, but, after all, not everyone could love Joey.

Oddly, I had heard the name Ernest Farrar but had never heard his music until, I think it was Friday of last week on the Radio 3 breakfast programme. Lovely.
Jennie, I might not be the only person for whom George Butterworth was one of the greatest losses of WW1.

Some of his music is available on YouTube. I listened to it a while back and thought it had a definite Vaughan Williams-ish sound.

Reading that bio, it seems that EBD is probably the reason he is known at all beyond a very small circle of people. But I wonder what his widow thought about EBD putting him in her books, if she knew about it.
