So, Alan Rickman has died of cancer, aged 69.

I will miss him far more than I will David Bowie.

He was an extraordinary actor, skilled, able to immerse himself in whatever part he played, whether on stage or in a film.

Above all else, he was believable.

RIP

A certain edge when she spoke of Mrs Maynard, certainly, but, after all, not everyone could love Joey.

Oh how sad, I only really know him as Professor Snape and he played the part wonderfully.

I'm not into Harry Potter, but have fond memories of him in Sense and Sensibility, Love Actually and that (admittedly a bit silly, but I liked it at the time!) 1990s version of Robin Hood.

Sad news :( .

Didn't care about Bowie but Alan Rickman was wonderful, so sad.

Can't make up my mind whether I loved his Sheriff of Nottingham or his Colonel Brandon best. He stole the show in Robin Hood, but the way he looked at Kate Winslet when she was singing and playing the pianoforte... Absolutely gutted he's gone. RIP.

Bowie was part of my youth, but given the rockstar lifestyles of the '60s and '70s, it doesn't come as such a surprise when one of them goes prematurely - rightly or wrongly.

My first memory of Alan Rickman is as Obadiah Slope in the BBC's Barchester Chronicles in the early '80s. It was an all star cast and he was a relative unknown, but he was a big hit.

And Snape was the perfect role for him, of course. I can't think of anyone else who could have played the part.

A sad loss.

Very sad, a great loss. I'll always smile when I remember him shouting, 'I'm going to cut your heart out WITH A SPOON!'

I did write quite a bit about Alan Rickman but the lovely system here at work kicked me out when I went to post it.

Sad sad loss. When will a cure for cancer be found?

R.I.P. Alan.

I'm not a huge film buff, but I recognise a great and versatile actor when I see one. Alan Rickman was one of those.

I thought he was excellent in the Harry Potter films, but I think one of my favourite films with Alan Rickman in has to be Galaxy Quest.

I've only seen clips of it so the film I've yet to see is called either Dogma or Dogmata where he plays Metatron (I think!), an extremely sarcastic angel.

I was shown "Dogma" recently - it is definitely worth watching

And I am sure he'll be showing up the Metatron currently in post....

Mine too, "Barchester Chronicles" is still one of my all time favourite adaptations. Alan Rickman was perfect casting as Obadiah Slope and more than held his own against some very stiff competition.
