This looks like I'm spreeing, doesn't it? Forgive me, but I'd like to ask for prayers and kind thoughts for two long-time members of the board.

Linda's been a member since 2007! Her father had bladder cancer earlier in the year and then seemed to be clear, but this last week has been very weak and in great pain in his legs and back, so they finally took him back to hospital, where they were told the cancer had moved to his bones, hence the severe pain. There's nothing they can do for him and are now trying to find him a hospice bed. It was a great shock to all the family, who are very close. Please keep them all in your prayers.

The other member in need is Sarah, who joined the board in 2004! Her partner contacted me 2 days ago with dreadful news. I'll quote from her email:

On 11th December Sarah was involved in a serious car crash. It wasn't her fault and is being dealt with by the police. The other person veered onto her side of the road and caused a head on collision. There was cctv from a house nearby. She braked and tried to move left but there was a hedge and nowhere to go. He has walked away with a few bruises. Sarah sadly had a large stroke as a consequence. A vessel tore, filled with blood and caused clots to the brain. She had emergency surgery and was in critical care for 9 days. She got a very nasty chest infection. It was the left side of the brain that was affected and there is one stem they couldn't do anything with, which affects speech. Thankfully, she doesn't remember the crash, but speech and language is a problem.

The awful thing is that Sarah, who's not yet forty, had recently given up secretarial work and was training to be a teacher, a long-held dream. Please pray that she recovers enough to return to it, and also for her parents and partner.

What a dreadful year 2016 has been all round!

So sad to hear this awful news for both Linda and Sarah. I hope Linda's father's last days are as gentle and painfree as they can be made and that Sarah makes as full a recovery as is possible. They are all in my thoughts and prayers.

That is such sad news to hear at any time, but especially at this time of year, Mary, thank you for alerting us. I hope that Linda's father can be moved to a hospice very soon, and that his last days will be as peaceful as possible. Also that Sarah will make as good a recovery as possible. I will be holding both of them and their families in my thoughts and prayers.

May I also ask for thoughts and prayers for the granddaughter of a friend of mine. With her parents and brother, she was involved in a collision when another vehicle crossed the centre line and hit theirs head on. Her parents and brother have relatively minor injuries, but she suffered a serious spinal one and it's feared she may never walk again. She is only twenty two, and had just started a post graduate degree.

This has certainly been a bad year for far too many people. May 2017 be a much better one all round.

Yes, three dreadfully sad stories - sending prayers and positive thoughts and hoping that all the people involved are given support and find the strength they will need.

I would like to thank MaryR for posting the sad news about my beloved dad's illness. We've had another talk to the doctors today and been given more information. We now understand that, as well as affecting his bones, the cancer has also metastasized in his brain which is causing him to be very confused and to have hallucinations including a visit from Queen Victoria and a floating footstool! Today, at least he was pain free and sleeping most of the time and we are praying for a gentle passing. He has a strong faith and is sure that my mum, whom he nursed 24hours a day for 15 years and who passed Away 17 years ago, is waiting for him. Thank you so much for yours prayers and positive thoughts. My thoughts are with others who are suffering at this time, particularly Sarah.

Thank you for adding further info, Linda, and I am so glad he's at peace. What a wonderful man, to have done that for your mother...

My prayers, and those of my MA remain with you all.

The life and passion of a person leave an imprint on the ether of a place. Love does not remain within the heart; it flows out to build secret tabernacles in a landscape. (John O'Donohue: Anam Cara)

Go well.
Go tidy.
Go having shared.
Go accomplished.
Go free.

Prayers winging their way for Linda, Sarah and Elder's friends' granddaughter and all their families at this difficult time.

And for anyone else who needs them.

I may have mentioned before a friend who had early-onset dementia - she was diagnosed when still under 50. She had been deteriorating rapidly and died a few days before Christmas. Please remember her husband and two (grown-up) daughters at this time. The funeral is on 11th Jan.

Thoughts for those who need them. Just out of interest, is one allowed to be a 'spineless jellyfish' after husband's passing? Because I am trying hard not to be, as my 22 year old son is in a very weird mood and needs support but won't hear of bereavement counselling.........?!

I think you are very much allowed to be whatever you need to be fio. I am also not sure that I would describe it as being spineless.

It takes time to find one's way through the various stages of grieving and each person's journey is differently paced.

Thinking of both you and your son.....

I'm glad to say there is better news of my friend's granddaughter. Despite the initial fear that she might not walk again, she had feeling in her toes almost immediately after the post-operative sedation wore off. Barely a week later, she can be hoisted to her feet with special equipment and stand in it for 20 minutes at a time, while feeling continues to return to her legs, from the feet upwards. She will still need intensive rehab, but the signs are very encouraging.

I will continue to send positive thoughts and vibes to all who need them.

I'm so sorry for your loss, fio.

Be however you need to be. There's a certain amount of pressure on people to "stay strong" after a bereavement, and I wish there wasn't: everyone has to grieve in their own way.

Echoes this. You can be anything and everything you are at this time. Take care of yourself and post if you need or want to.
