Or be filmed dancing at the Notting Hill Carnival...

Or say to the tellyperson holding a microphone in front of your chest "But don't tell anybody - I'm supposed to be at work!"

Or be filmed with someone you shouldn't be with - it cost a German gentleman a very expensive divorce!

Sending me a letter to tell me I have a tuition debt of 6 agarot (approx 1.5p) is a waste of money.

All debts below the cost of a stamp should be dealt with by email - or preferably cancelled.

Given that the smallest coin is 10 agarot, I don't even know how to pay this - but they won't let me sit exams until it is paid... Trying to pay something like that by credit card is even more ridiculous.

Unfortunately, it's all computer-generated! There are quite often pictures in the papers (on slow news days!) of someone clutching a letter from HM Revenue & Customs, their local council or one of the utility companies, telling them that they owe 1p or 2p. You'd think someone would check them before they go out, but apparently not. It's ridiculous that they won't let you pay your exams until it's paid, though. They joys of technology!

Do you still have cheques? I would write them a cheque for that exact amount - it's their problem how they get it cleared...

In Australia the smallest coin is 5 cents (apparently making 1 and 2 cent coins wasn't cost efficient). Shops still sell items at any whole number of cents, but after the cashier totals the bill, the amount is rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents if paying by cash. Any other legal tender (credit card etc.) the full amount is paid. I think most cashiers would have a fit if you tried to pay by cheque - I write one every year or so for accounts that aren't easily paid any other way.

Is there an option to pay by a 10 agarot coin and they credit you the remaining 8.5 agarot?

Couldn't agree more that that sort of sum is a waste of money to collect, but the 'no debts' condition may be in the university's charter. When I did the paperwork for graduating in 1973 we were all informed that any debts to the University had to be settled then and there, right down to the return of any library books! And that wasn't some bit of Ancient Rule - the university had only been in existence for ten years at that point.

Do not drop your glasses case (complete with glasses) into the bath.

When you have fished them out, do not put your glasses on the slightly sloping edge of the bath. They will fall into that tiny gap behind the wash basin where the pipes come through.

When you fetch your toolbox, do not balance it on the loo. You will knock it off with your shoulder after taking apart the boxing surrounding the pipes and retrieving your glasses. Those little pots containing small things will burst open and scatter their contents all over the floor.

Do not stand on said small things with bare feet...

I managed to drop the glasses plus case in the bath again today! I did remember not to put the glasses on the edge of the bath but...

Do not hang your glasses case on the handle of the window to dry. It will fall off onto the roof of the bay window below and you will have to hang out of the window with a "grabby stick" to rescue it.

Do not hold your iPad by its cover while trying to align 'Skywalk' with the night sky. It will fall onto the extension roof, and require getting a stepladder out in the dark and wet to climb up and retrieve it before it is damaged by the rain overnight. [Thankfully the fall didn't damage it or the roof.]

When you've spent hours trying to remove a screw (that turns freely, but won't go any further in or out), from a bookcase you're building, and then discover another screw works in the same hole perfectly, don't then attempt to put the first screw, which you've now established is the defective item, into another of the holes. You won't be able to remember which of the many things you tried did the trick first time round and it will take you even longer to remove it the second time.

If you have been working overtime or have untaken annual leave when you change jobs, you may be entitled to take a week off in lieu … but, if you write in your records that you have had a "week in loo", you may give a very strange impression  .
