A cheesecake which was supposed to turn out impressively marbled chocolate and cream instead it was a uniform sludgy brown! Luckily it tasted OK.

On a similar note, brownies heat up in 20 seconds, not five minutes.

For my first try-out of a microwave, many years ago, I used a fish-finger, forgetting that one would take much less time than the whole packet - it came out remarkably like petrified wood!

I still have difficulty setting the time on some microwaves - let me tell you, how they did not love me in the common room last night!

Saw the thing this morning, after someone dropped it out of the window. Looked very sorry for itself, although that might have been the rain.

I did something similar many years ago... husband used to put veggies in a steamer in the microwave, so I tried to do likewise when he was working late, but I never thought of reducing the cook time for my portion. Outcome: shrivelled veggies and destroyed steamer.

We currently haven't got a microwave, and I'm finding I don't really miss it except that it would be nice to try out the mug cake fad!

I couldn't manage without a microwave. As I live alone, and most of my cooking is for one person, I need one,so I have a Panasonic Combination microwave. Much better and more economical than using my big fan oven for cooking one chop.

Now I'd like to find small size vegetable steamer, as mine is family sized.

Steamers are brilliant - no more burnt carrots! I've got a Hackman steamer set that I wouldn't be without, though I don't use the porringer bit much.

How small is small, Jennie? Mine is about 9½ inches across, and I bought one for my mother who was living on her own and used it daily. I notice there are a number for sale on e-bay etc...

When I lived on my own, I had a steamer insert thing, which is basically a holey basket that you can put into an ordinary pan and steam the things in there. This sort of thing (you can get them in different sizes): https://www.amazon.co.uk/KitchenCraft-S ... mer+insert

Sign outside historic property and gardens:

"Only guide dogs allowed"

They must get rather bored wandering around there without their humans  .

My family-sized steamer is about ten inches across. What I need is a smaller one so I can do veg just for myself.

I have heard that there are steamers for use in a microwave, so must explore the internet.

The insert that Abbey recommends is just right for vegetables for one. Fits into both small and larger pans - it just spreads out wider in a larger pan so that you can put more veg on it. As long as you have a saucepan with a lid that fits, it works.

I have never found it worth while to use a special steamer in the microwave. Any microwave container with a spoonful or two of water will serve to "steam" vegetables. Including potatoes...

Another culinary-related PSA:

If you have an account on the Chaletian Bulletin Board under the pseudonym "Someone the Younger", don't cook. Ever.

On Windows 10, if you leave a youtube video playing when you close it, it will start replaying as soon as your laptop is out of sleep/hibernate mode again and before you log back in. (I quite enjoy it when I'm playing soundtrack music which is how I found this quirk in the first place, but I figured not everyone would!)

Try not to boggle too hard when a very pleasant young man rings the door-bell and says he's got six vans to deliver to your address, and you not only didn't order them, but nobody in the house can drive...

I think I'm confused about that one! What did he really mean?

I wondered that, Someone, but further conversation revealed that he meant quite literally what he said. He went off to make a phone call to see if he could get a correct address!

It's the more puzzling in that nobody in this street has space to park six vans, anyway, unless you mean toy ones, which he didn't...
