In job adverts, why can't the copywriters spell stationery?

I've lost count of the number of adverts I've seen with the incorrect spelling. Often alongside a claim that the job requires a high degree of attention to detail and accuracy, which somehow makes it worse!

Perhaps they really are looking for a clerk who can't move....

Perhaps to be successful a candidate needs to submit a corrected advertisement with their job application?

I actually seriously considered pointing out two faults in an application last night...

I've often been tempted, though I've never had the nerve to do it.

I had an interesting discussion with some friends of mine yesterday, twin sisters and the husband of one of the sisters. (I was going to write 'one of the sister's husbands', but then I doubted where the apostrophe should go. Would be interested to know whether others think I got it right!) The husband is my age and the twins are 3 years younger than us.

The husband was talking about how important correct grammar, spelling, etc was and the twins were accusing him of pedantism. So, I said that I agreed with him. I was then told that I should side with the twins because of feminine solidarity!

That's the first time I've been (albeit jokingly) accused of sexism in relation to caring about the proper use of our beautiful language. The twins seemed to think that men generally made a fuss about this than women.

I don't agree. Nor is it an age thing.

Maybe I should invite my friends to take a look at this thread. I know that the majority of CBB members are female, but there's still plenty of evidence that both men and women care about English usage.

Edited to remove a surplus word

Saw a sign yesterday in John Lewis -

Toilets upstairs on gentlemen's suits

Conjures up a lovely picture of a pile of suits and a loo on the top!

Thanks for making me laugh out loud, ivohenry.

Yesterday I overheard a computer clip about Mr Trump's being surveilled. Hopefully he is no longer under surveillance now that he is president.

What an ugly verb! It has apparently been around since the 1960s. Please tell me that we don't use it in British English!

Apologies to those of you on the board who live the other side of The Pond!

Not sure if this is the right thread to make the above comment. Perhaps it should go in the Whinges one!

"Obie's is the problem."

After reading it several times, and from context, I *think* the writer may mean "obesity", but... the mind boggles!

Lovely example of mixing just spotted while re-skimming EBD's Trials for the Chalet School, at the end of chapter VI - the Scarlet Fever epidemic has just started in school and at Freudesheim and Cecil is in the throes of teething:

"No one wanted Cecil to start, for her hands were already full with her teeth."

Someone has been very busy at work while I was off and has labelled all the drawers where office supplies live.

We now have one for post tray's, one for envelope's and one for general stationary.

I noticed today that this sign has now been changed. Now says

Toilets are on mezzazine floor next to Gentlemen's Suits.

Wonder if someone commented on it!

What I can't stand are newspaper articles which complain that children don't know correct grammar as they never learn any.

They then use phrases such as 'One of our most well-respected ' . Haven't they heard of the comparison of adverbs?
