Do you know I sometimes loathe these 3 for the price of 2 or buy one and get one for free offers. Sometimes it's impossible to do anything with the extra and I only want the original amount. Some things like bags of clementines I can neither carry or eat the extra and end up by not buying any because the extra is more trouble than its worth but I don't want to refuse!

Yes, I wish the price of the single units would just come down in general. Such offers don't exist in Germany or the Czech Republic.

But in the meantime I have started to put the extra that I don't really want into the collecting crate for the local food bank. I am in two minds about doing this since I deeply deplore the fact that we now seem to have accepted food banks as inevitable, but since the need is there, I go along with it.

My Church, probably like many others, now collects food for foodbanks on an ongoing basis, with different foods requested every few weeks. Sad times we live in but a good idea to put unwanted offers to foodbanks.

If you don't have or don't want to contribute to a food bank, try asking friends if they are interested in the offers. I regularly do this when I am back in the UK and it's a win/win situation. The food isn't wasted and the price is shared.

I also contribute to the local food bank. In fact one of the local ones operates from my church.

Unfortunately, they are not generally able to accept perishable goods, such as fresh fruit and veg, but such things as toiletries and packet/tinned goods, which are on offer would be gladly accepted.

Sorry, this is not an advert for food banks, just an explanation for anyone who might not be clear.

This hit the news recently - just goes to show how important punctuation can be in all languages!

The Gaelic literally reads - 'the beautiful island of p*nises'. Not sure that's a tempting prospect myself

Thanks for that, AilidhNoor. Yep, accents definitely important in French, too.

And now for something different: my neighbours and I recently received a flyer from a Chelmsford-based firm of builders and landscapers. It was headed "As your local installer, we can offer a beautiful driveway or patio and total peace of mind". While it's true that they offer a very wide range of products, I was disappointed not to find the said peace of mind listed among them, and am more than a bit puzzled to know how they propose to provide it, leave alone make it total...

Also, they say they are your local installer. Chelmsford is some distance from the West London Alps....

I do online market research surveys in exchange for Amazon vouchers.

Today, when asked what I liked/disliked about some wording, I have been pointing out frmly that it should be "may we...?" not "can we...?" as permission is being asked.

I've just received an e-mail informing me that "Unfortchunatly we don't have ...".

This is from a firm in the UK, and the person's name indicates that English is definitely his first language. Sorry to be fussy, but that's the worst attempt at spelling "unfortunately" that I've ever seen .

It's completely logical though...

I often use Freegle (a site where you list items you no longer want, to see if anyone else can make use of them). My SLOC thinks it is amusing that my criteria for offering the items is the first to respond using decent English - spelled correctly, and with punctuation as appropriate.

Remember Dan Quayle and his "potatoe"? Maybe all senior politicians should be made to take spelling tests  .

What a good idea, Alison. I may be wrong, but I wonder whether some of our British politicians would perform any better!

Rather disappointed with Call the Midwife last night. A newspaper purporting to be from 1962 declared that somewhere was celebrating "it's second birthday".
I'm fairly sure a journalist back then would have known the right one to use. Did no one in the production team notice?
