I feel really sickened at the moment. All this vicious stuff on Facebook and other sites, especially when these posters use terrible sexual imagery.

For heaven's sake, using obscene language to describe someone does not make your POV more righteous, or make you seem clever and up-to-date, it just makes you seem very, very limited and ill-educated, without a shred of compassion or understanding of humanity.

This appalling nonsense ties in rather well with the discussion on schooling: Primary school children lose marks in Sats tests for misshapen commas

(And if anyone can detect a difference in the four pictures, two marked correct, two wrong, then they have much better eyes than I have!)

Talking of schools, I read this morning that a school in New Zealand changed a word in a song from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Apparently, whoever did this was concerned that people from Palestine might be offended by 'Children of Israel are never alone' and changed it to 'Children of kindness' .

Oh please! :banghead: I can just imagine how ALW and Tim Rice would react to that!! Besides which, wasn't Israel used in a different way at one time? I think it was a theological something or other (what I can't remember) that we learned about in Sunday School.

Ah, Rice or Lloyd-Webber actually either tweeted or wrote an open letter expressing their displeasure and the lyrics were changed back. I believe at least one song was also dropped, and they should have requested permission for any changes.

We had children with surname White at a youth group. One of our helpers, who is Nigerian, sometimes took them home at the end . One time someone said to her - Are you taking the White children home tonight? She looked a bit startled, then burst out laughing. Hadn't occurred to the rest of us how it sounded. Fortunately she saw the funny side.

Whenever I hear stuff like this, I am reminded of the solution mentioned by CJ in an episode of The West Wing - a silenced automatic on a street corner at night.

At a writers' conference I was at, one of the attendees talked about the   reaction he got when he mentioned at a book fair that he was going to have a meeting with the 'little brown people'.

Little, Brown is of course a well known publishing company.

I think my sarcasm meter just exploded!

Maybe there's going to be more edits to other Blytons to reflect the "makeup is gender neutral" belief. Can't wait for Elizabeth Allen to lend her makeup to Mr Johns at Whyteleafe...

I have always thought that fiction, whether intended for children or not, provides important evidence of social history as well as entertainment and instruction. Editing it to avoid offending those of delicate sensibilities is cultural vandalism. Besides, I am sure that modern boys reading Enid Blyton are able to make up their own minds about wearing pretty dresses or make-up. (here's a tip, lads: do it if you want, but don't go out of the house.)

Yeah. It's like those mothers/fathers that want to make a political statement with their baby's name. I feel that if you want to make a political statement, do it yourself and leave your child out of it. No one should have to explain their parent's politics every time that they introduce themselves.

I would actually quite like to see Peggy Bettany tell her Uncle Jem and Uncle Jack that they need to wear face powder so that other people are not offended by the sight of their shiny noses  . But I really don't like the idea of books which reflect the time in which they were written being censored and edited in this sort of way.

Alison: There's a campaign in my home city to re-name Deakin University because Alfred Deakin supported eugenics. But... supporting eugenics was common in Deakin's time so it's rather like condemning him for drinking water. Never mind that many Chinese and Japanese believed in eugenics as strongly as any European. See also the Native South American atrocities such as human sacrifice (including *children* as the more of their tears, the more rain would come). These atrocities get left out a lot as they interfere with the narrative of good people who were innocent victims of the evil Europeans.

I've come across someone whose parents should be shot for what they've obviously put their daughter through with her name. Obviously I can't give the name but I can show the principle of it by using instead the name Cath'E - say it out loud and you get Cathy but imagine going through life having to spell it or convince people that the spelling and apostrophe were not typos on a form... There's being creative and there's being down-right unfair!

Or go right ahead and go out of the house, and let other people be responsible for their own reactions?

That really is silly. I seem to spend an awful lot of time correcting the positioning of apostrophes. I really couldn't care less what shape they are: I just want them in the right places! It's no wonder that kids get demoralised when they're criticised for things like what shape their commas are.

A lot of mothers (and we have to be honest, it's still mothers who make the main decision) can't seem to see beyond the baby to the grown woman she will one day become. While i strongly disagree with name nerds screaming "legit" and "non-legit" as things are always changing and evolving ("that's good, got to keep moving"), some mothers should really remember that they are naming an adult as well as a baby.

Seen today in a job advert: matrix's

I'm pretty sure the plural should be matrices (possibly matrixes is acceptable).

One thing I'm sure about is that the first one is totally unacceptable! Who do they get to check their copy?

I posted a request for help in a "customer help forum" today. Trying to get help from this large, well-known company by phone is a waste of time.

An e-mail then arrived. Was it answering my question? No - it was informing me that I had been awarded a "Quest For Knowledge" virtual badge for posting a request for help.
