I stumbled across this film on YouTube a few days ago and thought it might be of interest to some members here.

Based on a story by Rumer Godden, Diana Rigg plays a wealthy woman who gives up her successful life in business to enter a convent for reasons that she keeps very much to herself. However, her literally cloistered new life is thrown into turmoil when a beautiful novice -Judi Bowker - enters the convent.

I won't spoil anything, but simply say I found it fascinating. It makes an interesting contrast with Black Narcissus, also by Rumer Godden, dealing as it does with women together in isolation.

I haven't posted for quite a while. Life gets in the way sometimes, but it's nice to be back!

Have you read the book? I understand the film is a somewhat loose interpretation.

Do read the book, Oscar! I have to say I could never bring myself to watch the film as I felt it would spoil the book.

I've never read the book, but I'll see if the library have it. I'd be interested to compare it with the film.

Isn't it sad that one can buy a good book for so little, and pay such a lot of postage?

What annoys me is that it's only the cost of the book that shows in your "basket", so it looks as if you're getting, say, 5 books for 5p ... until you go to pay, when it becomes 5 books for £14.05. All right, I know it tells you what the postage is, but it should show you as well!

Books usually class as large letters, so you can get away with £1.54 postage, but, by the time Amazon have taken their cut, sellers aren't left with very much from £2.80, which is the usual postage charge. But it's still annoying!

The film's ok if you haven't seen the book but if you've read that first the film is altered too much. The book is great.
