Had a surprisingly lovely two days in Swindon at the beginning of the week helping my son (succesfully) house-hunt as he suddenly got a start date of 24th April for a new job which he was offered in November but for which the necessary security clearance has only just come through. But I am astounded at how little he gets for his rent down there than he would in the North-West!

Ugh yes, that's one of the reasons my sister and I moved to York when we moved out of our mum's house in Hampshire... down there we could barely have paid for a garage; in York we had a lovely little terraced house!

Indeed! It's one reason I never see myself settling in the UK (as I can't find a role in my field outside of London really).

It's been so nice having 4 days off. There are lambs and daffodils and bluebells. And birds tweeting. And Easter eggs.

I'm going down to London to the National Gallery on the 16th May, to view the Michelangelo and Sebastiano exhibition.

After 2½ weeks of no internet, I'm finally online again.

A neighbour very kindly lets me piggyback on her connection when I'm here in Germany, but she's having problems changing her contract (long story) and her provider has currently cut her off completely. Thankfully, when some other neighbours found out earlier this evening they promptly offered to share their connection with me. (I'm so lucky to have such lovely neighbours, both here and back in the UK too.)

I've had friends staying with me for most of the time this trip and it temporarily turned us into those antisocial types who sit in cafés ignoring each other because they're so busy hunched over their phones.

I've done it, I finished it, I have handed in my thesis and my supervisor is delighted! Even better, he regularly marks theses and he claims that mine is one of the best he's ever read…I mean, he admits he's biased, but honestly, I don't care, I'm just so relieved!

Abbey is here with me and we have been out for dinner cocktails, as well as lunch with chattie, which was very lovely. And my choir have sent me a video of them all at rehearsal tonight, singing, "Happy thesis!" to the tune of, "Happy Birthday" :D

Best of all, I can get back to drabbling very soon…

Not to start a thread on the evils or otherwise of smartphones but I'm always slightly bemused by claims that smartphones have made us antisocial. Humans have been more than capable of being antisocial long before they were invented. I remember when I was a child seeing people in cafes sitting and staring out of the window or reading newspapers rather than talk to the person with them.
I'd rather bury myself in a book than have to try to make polite small talk. I find many social situations extremely hard work.

Is true, RubyGates - and social media's a bloody lifesaver for some of us!

Many congratulations, Finn! You are awesome!

Many, many congratulations, Finn.

My son, Andrew, usually rolls his eyes when I mention going to shop at Lidl or Aldi, but today, when he had to drive to the other Argos to pick up a new barbecue, he actually said that he'd drop me off at Lidl, then I could cross the road and he'd pick me up. When he picked me up, he actually volunteered to take me to Aldi, so we spent some time looking round the shop. We didn't find what we wanted, but it was so nice that he volunteered.
