If you were reading an article about art, in this case Chinese art but I think that is not a material issue, would you expect to see "objects of art" for artifacts, or "objets d'art"?

Objets d'art, definitely - I suppose somebody in the editing department may have objected to having anything in a language other than English (assuming that the article was in English). I'm increasingly coming across this, as apparently fewer and fewer native English speakers have any foreign language skills - and that includes some of the expensively educated...

Actually, you just took me straight back in memory to an antiques shop that opened near my home in the 1960s, and had the words 'Objects de Art' on the fascia board. It eventually changed to the proprietor's forenames 'Edith Sarah', either because she realised it was incorrect (or was fed up with being told), or it simply gave out the wrong message ("Whoi dew that say 'Art', when she doon't sell noo paint brushes 'n' stuff?").

"Objets d'art".

As I'm well past the first flush of youth, perhaps it's an age thing and, as Noreen says, fewer people having any knowledge of languages other than English.
