It will indeed be worth it Chattie. We are in the throes of building work too, in the Czech Republic, growing the space so that my daughter can come and live over here permanently. Fortunately not too much horror in the part of the house we are occupying though.

However yesterday I came across a parody of a poem I love, that I must have written whilst doing the original, major, reconstruction of the house 12 years or so ago. I offer you both the original poem, and my despairing version, to amuse you in your trials.

When all this is over, said the swineherd,
I mean to retire, where
Nobody will have heard about my special skills
And conversation is mainly about the weather.

I intend to learn how to make coffee at least as well
As the Portuguese lay sister in the kitchen
And polish the brass fenders every day.
I want to lie awake at night
Listening to cream crawling to the top of the jug
And the water lying soft in the cistern.

I want to see an orchard where the trees grow in straight lines
And the yellow fox finds shelter between navy blue trunks,
Where it gets dark early in summer
And the apple blossom is allowed to wither on the bough.
Eilean Ni Chuilleanain

With apologies to Eilean Ni Chuilleanain
When all this is over, said the renovator,
I mean to move in, and
Never think again about bricks, electrics, window panes,
And never make another decision

I intend to recline without movement on my couch
And never open another magazine
Especially ones relating to doing up houses.
I want to lie awake at night
Without a single thought on renovation
Or whether this or that will ever be done in time
And if I should have chosen a different cistern.

I want to see my garden filled with plants of my choosing
And not be wading though forests of nettles and ground elder.
I want to sit on the darkening terrace at twilight
Watching my purple plums ripening on the bough.

This is why I keep putting it off! It won't last for ever, though, and I'm sure it'll all look great when it's sorted.

I deeply sympathise, chattie - we're currently having our front room completely refurbed, and that's quite bad enough, as I had to clear the entire room (packed 42 boxes of books alone!) and the whole house is affected because we had so much in there...It could be worse, though. K used to have a colleague whose hobby was to buy a rather wrecked house and do it up for resale: his family (which included young children) had to camp out in the house until he finished, whereupon they'd move to another wreck and he'd start again...

When we had the building redevelopment plan at work, it was so bad that I pinned the following Osibisa lyric to my office door:
We are going, heaven knows where we are going,
We'll know we're there.
We will get there, heaven knows how we will get there,
We know we will.

It will be hard we know
And the road will be muddy and rough,
But we'll get there, heaven knows how we will get there,
We know we will.

We are going, heaven knows where we are going,
We'll know we're there.

Yes. It Will Be Wonderful When It's Finished. Hang on to that. :-)

Thanks to all for the positive thoughts. The electricians finished on Saturday. The plasterers are due to be here Wednesday-Friday (but that may be Friday-Sunday...). Oh, and on the penultimate day the electrician's mate (who happens also to be a plumber) discovered a leaky radiator pipe and has advised that he suspects the whole system of pipes (from what he saw under the floorboards during the rewiring) is on its last legs. So I think we're going to have to grit our teeth yet further and look at an overhaul of the central heating before we do any redecorating...... It. Will. Be. Worth. It. In. The. End.

That's a bit of a bu**er, Chattie - but at least it's been found before you start decorating, rather than someone casually mentioning it right at the end!

Keep smiling through!!!
