I always look for a nice greeting inside, preferably the shorter the better as I like to write my own..

However this year I had to take my cards back and buy more subdued ones, as my grandmother passed away a few days after I had purchased them. Wishing the whole family a 'Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year' did not seem appropriate when we are all grieving, so I bought ones that just read Seasons Greetings.

Then I had to go through the same palaver with my mother (returning cards, I mean. Mum is in perfectly good health). Spent about an hour in M&S reading the insides of cards and debating the appropriateness of glitter

That's why we print our own and give a suitable amount to a chosen charity each year.

Why don't we have Christmas carols in shops anymore but just general Christmassy songs? If you don't want to celebrate the main bit then why bother?

Because we all need a winter festival whether we happen to believe in the christian story or not! There have been winter festivals for a lot longer than there have been christians!

I wandered round our local shopping centre and market today and only heard carols, both from shops and from two groups of children singing in the mall. One group very good, the other not so much.

And all the cards I picked up, in the many charity shops, had very gentle greetings inside, usually either Season's Greetings or With best wishes at Christmas.

I went to buy a congratulations on the birth of your baby girl card, and, next to those cards, were cards saying "Better luck next time". For a moment I thought they were meant for parents who'd been hoping for a boy   ... but I assume the idea is to send them to someone who's just failed an exam! Is this a thing now?! Good job they weren't around when I was failing 4 driving tests before passing at the 5th attempt! Do people really send "Better luck next time" cards?

Never, ever seen one. Surprised to see Congratulations on Your Divorce cards next to the Congratulations on Your Wedding ones!

One of my nicest memories when Christmas shopping comes from a couple of years ago in Cardiff. I was in a department store - the one which is never knowingly undersold - when a male voice choir sang carols in the atrium. Everyone paused and had a smile on their faces. It was a real shock to go out into the Mall and have Christmas pop songs blaring out.

Must be different parts of the world because I have heard no carols played in any shop where I live and have not done for a few years.

I know there are lots of carol concerts around but in Edinburgh on 1st December at the Christmas markets there was a group of young children singing a general Christmas song. At our shopping centre on 8th December a group of secondary school children playing Scottish songs although reason they were there was maybe nothing to do with Christmas.

I am sympathetic to other religous celebrations and would be to a non-religious one but the name "Christmas" says it all and should be treated as such.

My local shopping centre played "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" three times in succession today.

My Sainsbury's played Away in A Manger followed by Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody this afternoon. Much quieter than I expected, not much different from a normal Saturday. Although the cashier who served me said they'd been very busy earlier.

I've not heard the dreaded Slade song yet this year, let's hope my luck continues.

I rather like the Slade song  . Not as much as the Pogues song and the Wham! song, though.

I miss the race for the Christmas no 1. It used to be genuinely exciting - ooh, the tension in 1988, would it be Cliff Richard or would it be Kylie and Jason  ? - but Simon Cowell sort of killed it off.

Yep, join the club!!! Although the one that is especially difficult to hear is 'Have yourself a merry little Christmas'. The lyrics can be upsetting for someone who is bereaved (me - hubby last year, dad this year!). I've had to disappear off the sales floor a couple of times and last year I had to drop out of it for our Christmas concert as I was getting too upset................

fio, hugs to you and anyone else who's been bereaved - I know there are just times when something unexpected catches you on the raw. We all have to get through it as best we can, unfortunately - hoping the happy memories soon take over from the sad ones.

Christmas can be dire when it brings back memories of happier times. It can also make the lonely feel even more lonely and what, too, about going into debt over it? A mixed time of year.

Edited to add - Thinking of everyone on here feeling the loss of those dear to them. ((((Fio and all others ))))

Having coffee with a friend this morning in Sainsbury's cafe.

Yes it happened. 'So, here it is, Merry Christmas, everybody's having fun'

I wasn't. That song spoiled the morning for me.
