If anyone gets a chance to see Val McDermid on her book tour, it’s well worth it. I went to one at our local library tonight, was only £3 but talk was long and detailed, all about what brought her to writing and what her writing process and motivations are and the talk would interest people from here I think even if not a fan yet of her books.

She mentions the Chalet School a lot, and makes the point that what makes it different is that the characters have ongoing lives and consequences for their actions. Also very funny about things in the series too, while affectionately funny rather than putting the books down.
