BBC Radio trailer: small boy saying of Anthony Joshua: “you should of saw his guns”. Ouch!

I can’t decide if it’s the of or the saw which grates most!

Same here :D - and I've also heard a conversation between two adults that included "You should of gone" "No, I wouldn't of went"

Found this comment on another message board to which I belong.

"Weakest Link repeated a footballers special just before the 2002 World Cup, which featured Kenneth Wolstenholme. The BBC announcer on the night even said before the airing the episode was filmed before his death."

Surely that was should've which is perfectly acceptable. Also in the media guidelines you announce things such as the footballer's death because his friends may be watching or it may upset people.

I'm a pedant when it comes to grammar and especially use of hyphens but I think some pedantry can stray too far into literalism

Lady "Anne" Dodd was addressed that way to use her new title (apparently Sir Ken was very proud of his knighthood) but also use her first name not Lady D which would be too formal for the occasion - I know someone connected with that press release. Not technically correct but the right thing to do in the circs.

"Free hot drink on the reverse of this card" (an invitation to attend a sale at a local department store). I know what they meant, but there was nothing on thr reverse of the card except printed words  .

On the radio trail, it’s clearly not should’ve, which I’d be fine with, it’s the punchline of the trail and each word is emphasised / enunciated separately.

Mind you, I’m not criticising the boy, not his fault at all, I’m sure, he only sounds about 10.

Our doctor's surgery has a notice: "Please use touchscreen to arrive".

Shades of "Beam me up Scotty!"

Nice one, cestina! I really must check how my own surgery makes the same request about touching screen on arrival.

Ours is the same as Cestina's in 3 languages, well I assume the others are direct translations anyhow.

Today, somebody delighted in repeating a sentence he'd heard at work to me: "I had to learn them how to learn it because they didn't know how to learn it because they had bad learning skills."

Do you laugh or cry?

Kicking myself - just putting away nine jars of homemade pickle to see that I had neatly labelled each one "Sweet Picalli" instead of "Sweet Piccalilli"! No good kidding myself, I am going to have to re-label each one :banghead:

No-one is waiting with "baited breath" for the announcement of the royal birth, or indeed anything else. At least, I hope they're not, because it would suggest that they'd been swallowing bits of worm and fish, and not even brushed their teeth afterwards.

Some surgeries ask 'Please arrive yourself using touchscreen'.

I always arrive myself as there's no-one else to do it for me before I get there.

The joys of living amid the A14 upgrade ( two years in, scheduled to finish 2020)! A notification from the Highways Agency about the next complete closure of the road says:
"We have deliberately timed these closers to co-inside with the weekend..."

You would have to be particularly dense to entrust your academic reputation to a company with such a... unique grasp of the language, would you not?

You would indeed have to be particularly dense, and yes it does read like an automated translation. Not entirely irrelevant to the CS, mind you, as it reminded me of the dialogue between Vi Lucy and Miss Linton in Three Go when Vi has to do some impromptu translation from French into English...

After almost 10 weeks working in a departmental office of a university, not much would surprise me regarding student submissions. Although to be fair, our dept is very strong when it comes to any suggestion of plagiarism. I'm sure they would pick it up really quickky, if someone tried to use this site.
