I didn't see that coming, especially as Louis is George's third name. Prince Philip will be so pleased they've chosen Lord Mountbatten's name. It'll certainly please the bookies - I don't think there were too many bets on Louis!

ETA - hmm, just remembered that Earl Spencer's son and heir, William's first cousin, is called Louis, so there's a definite Spencer link in there, too.

Yes, the bookies should be breathing a bit easier this morning - apparently they were panicked into closing betting on Albert when there was a flurry of bets on it late yesterday. And Louis may or may not please the French...

The Daily Mail (sorry) says Louis was 20/1 so a good day for the bookies.

I've been trying to work out if there's a direct connection to all the French Louis (what is the plural of Louis?! Loues?!). There is from Louis IX via the Bourbons - from Henrietta Maria to Charles II and through various illegitimate lines to the Queen Mother and Diana - but I'm not sure about Louis XIII, XIV et al ... probably not, because of the religious restriction. Not to mention the fact that Queen Victoria's son Arthur - Arthur being the baby's middle name - was named after the Duke of Wellington   .

You doubtless knew this, Alison, but apparently Lord Mountbatten was related to the Grand Dukes of Hesse and through them the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt, for all of whom Louis seems to have been a family name, though a few may have been Ludwig...

I highly recommend Hessian Tapestry by David Duff, which goes into the history of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt :D . Prince Philip's doubly descended from them on his mother's side - the Battenbergs (his grandfather's family) were a morganatic branch of the Hesse-Darmstadts (the main branch of which were his grandmother's family). And they were gloriously intermarried with the Romanovs ...

I wish they'd chosen Michael as the third name, though. They've already got Princess Charlotte, so I don't think they needed to get Prince Charles's name in there again, and I feel a bit put out on behalf of the Middletons! I know Charlotte and Elizabeth are Pippa and Kate's middle names, but even so.
