I like Victoria and Alexandra but also Isabelle. The latter would be a tribute to the Queen as Isabelle is another form of Elizabeth.

Philip, Alexander or Nicholas for a boy. All the other names I like have already been taken, William, George, Harry, Andrew, Edward. I think they are more likely to use one or other of those as a second name.

I doubt we'll see another Prince Phillip until the Duke of Edinburgh dies (supposing that that actually happens - both he and the Queen seem to have a touch of the immortals about them!), but Nicholas would be good. I like Patric(k), too.

There does seem to be a very strong feeling among the Royal family about not having repeat names. As Alison H said in a previous post, the number of Princess Victorias we had at one point was only got over by giving them nicknames like Ducky or calling them by forms of their other names such as Ena - which of course wouldn't do for formal occasions.

I think that's very sensible. I understand that some people do like to use family names, but it gets rather confusing when you have Madge, Margot, Daisy and Peggy all in one family  .

Apparently there's been a sudden rush of bets on Allegra, because of a rumour that the late Diana, Princess of Wales liked the name. I can't see them going for something that isn't a traditional royal name, but it's very La Rochelle, even if not very Chalet School :D . EBD seemed very keen on using Italian names in some of her non-CS books.

I once had a slightly spooky moment with the name Allegra - I was on the bus, coming along beneath the church on Harrow Hill, and thinking of Byron's daughter Allegra who died as a child and is buried in the porch, when one of the schoolkids turned to her friend and said "D'you know Allegra? She lives about here somewhere..."

I wondered about Henrietta for a girl, after Prince Harry, and then thought that a sort of matchingly Stuart name for a boy might be Rupert.

After Prince Rupert of the Rhine :D ? The bookies would love that - I don't think anyone'll have bet on Rupert!

Philip Thomas Charles? heaping coals of fire on her father's head even though he's been a nuisance with his interviews and tantrums?

I hope they go for Alexander, just because I like the name  . The bookies are saying James, but Edward and Sophie's son's James, so I can't see them going for that. Or Arthur, which I'd personally like because it was my late grandad's name and he was a big fan of the royal family!

I was amused by an article in The Times yesterday about possible names for Baby Sussex. Apparently, the Duchess has said she likes the name Grey. Readers were quick to comment on the possibility of Grey Windsor: sounds like:

- a soup

- a kind of tea

- the name of a Farrow and Ball paint

:D

Those are brilliant, lizco - I especially like the paint option! I suppose what's chosen may partly depend on whether this baby and any siblings have the title 'Prince' or 'Princess'.

No, the baby won't be given the title of prince until it's grandfather becomes king.

Apparently there are all sorts of rules and regulations, which means Orders in Council and decrees, if I've got that right, unless the Queen decides to make the newborn a Prince.

Still, it will probably grow up with the title of Earl of Dumbarton.

I wrinkled my nose when I first heard the name, but now I think it's rather cute. It has a nice flow to it.

I had no idea that Archie was now a popular name. I am afraid that I am of the generation that immediately thinks of this!

I just read that the couple have rejected his being known as the Earl of Dumbarton...

I think Archie sounds suitably Drones Club for the child of a younger son!

And Harrison/'Harry's son' is quite clever, though they and he will probably get fed up with it later.

No I was still thinking along more trad lines like Christopher or Hugo!
SLOC did at least come up with Archibald as a possible, along with a few other similar like Marmaduke...
