Whenever EMBD describes a guest room/ spare room, there's invariably a selection of books, from the few dozen unspecified ones in the Highland Twins' room to a bookcase 'crammed with a catholic selection of books' (obviously more to her taste!).

Would sort of books do you think that selection might have contained? And what are your own ideas about books suitable for guests? Maybe this depends on who your guests are likely to be, too...

A catholic selection means a universal selection, not just books about Catholicism. Sorry if you and others already know this and I have "mansplained" but perhaps other people might be confused coming to this thread.

Jo has a collection of Kiplings in her own bedroom in Highland Twins too.

I have never left books out for guests but I have had guests borrow books!

I don't know about books for a guest room, but remember in the days of sometimes visiting relatives or friends houses with my parents, that there would often be large piles of Readers Digest magazines in the bathroom and/or lavatory room. Probably in some guest rooms as well.

My friend, a vicar's wife, was given a painting of the church's graveyard when they left one parish. In the next house, she hung it in the guest room, with a copy of Agatha Christie's "Murder at the Vicarage" on the bedside table :D

There's a long bookcase in my guest room that stretches the entire length of the wall under the window. About half of the books in it are non fiction and half fiction. My guests have a good selection and are welcome to dip into any of them, but woe betide anyone who takes a book with them when they leave because they're all ones that for one reason or another I don't want to part with.
