Don't think so, they've said they'll only do one new CS a year from now on, to leave space for reprints and fill-ins and other authors.

If you look at their 'current bestsellers' page they are all new or fill-in CS books. I think they want to ensure that market lasts as long as possible.

Was Island much abridged ? I have the p/back but I vaguely remember a scene ( I thought it was Peggy and Bride ) reading a letter from home in one of their cubicles , they had bullseyes to suck and part of the letter was one of the younger Russell boys starting public school and Madge being worried about initiation rights , but Jem says that kind of thing isn't done anymore. I can't see it in my versions of Peggy or Island so wondering if this scene a ) exists or b) is from h/back Island ...

I've also only got the pb of Island, but was about to ask the same question about Richenda - is that sufficiently badly cut for it to be worth getting the GGBP edition when it comes out?

Just been looking through the new catalogue, which arrived today, and it says that they're going to be printing fewer new titles, and fewer books in general, in future.

There's a scene in Peggy which involves reading a letter (sent by Madge to Joey, and passed on to Peggy), but I don't remember anything about bullseyes or initiation rites.

There is an entire extra chapter in the HB of Richenda which describes the trip to the Valais (skipped over in two paragraphs at the end of chapter 14 in the paperback). Island is, according to the FOCS list, unabridged.

Oh. I had these ones down as ones they haven't published yet:
    Eustacia
    ..and Jo
    Gay from China
    Theodora
    Althea

I've been waiting in the hope GGBP reprint some of the titles. Annoyingly Eustacia sold on Ebay two weeks ago for only £6. :(

Island: back in the day I did a comparison for the FOCS magazine between the HB and various PB editions. If you've got an older PB (and I think it was one of the earlier ones to be published, I had what I think was a 70s version till it fell apart), then "unabriged" probably just about covers it.

But the more modern PBs have very, very frequent small updatings of the charabanc to coach type. Sometimes whole sentences are "updated".

So, you wouldn't be missing any story, but the feel / atmosphere of the book is very different, becuase the language is very different.

[quote="Alison H"]I've also only got the pb of Island, but was about to ask the same question about Richenda - is that sufficiently badly cut for it to be worth getting the GGBP edition when it comes out?

I always liked Richenda, and I like the details of home life which are often cut from the pbs, so I bought a hb a few years ago when I found one that wasn't too pricey. I was so glad I did - there was a whole new chapter and details which weren't in the pb. Annoyingly, I'm travelling so can't remember what the chapter was about - I think it covered a chat about old girls, but I may be confusing it with another hb. I'll check when I'm home later in the week!

There's a good article which lists the books and which had major (or minor) changes between the hb and pb here: http://www.collectingbooksandmagazines.com/ebd.html#New

The relevant bit says:
Differences Between Chalet School Hardbacks And Paperbacks

A lot of people have asked which paperbacks are the most cut. This list originally appeared in August 1998 in Le Petit Chalet, the booklet for members aged 13 and under produced by Friends of the Chalet School.

Unabridged uncut or with only occasional words updated (e.g. ‘charabancs’ changed to ‘coaches’)

CS And Jo, Camp, Exploits, Lintons+Rebel, New+United, War (Goes To It), Tom, Rescue, Rosalie/Mystery, Island, Wrong, Bride, Does It Again, Joey Oberland, Genius +Fete, Tirol, Reunion, Jane, Redheads, Future, Adrienne, Summer Term, Challenge, Two Sams, Althea, Prefects.

Minor Frequent Cuts

Jo Of, Princess, Rivals, Eustacia, New House, Jo Returns, Lavender, Peggy, Carola, Changes, Barbara, Kenya, New Mistress, Excitements, Leader, Wins The Trick, Triplets

Major Cuts - Either In Chunks Or Very Frequent Smallish Passages

School*, Highland Twins, Gay, Shocks, CS Oberland, Mary-Lou, Theodora, Coming Of Age

Very Major Cuts - Chapters Missing - Plus Other Cuts

Head Girl, Exile, Three Go, Problem, Coming Of Age, Richenda, Trials, Ruey, Feud

Caroline - I think it must be your article I found in my post above - thank you so much for it. I've consulted it more than once before deciding whether to invest in a HB!

A new Helen Barber fill-in has been uploaded to the site. It’s a (sort of) prequel again but I have to say I’m quite surprised at the choice of era; I would have expected perhaps something about the Bettany’s first holiday to the Tiernsee. :?

It might. This is presumably going to focus on Madge's last term, and may start with a trip to the Tiernsee in the Easter holidays, or end with it in the summer holidays.

At the same time, I think she is really trying to develop the character of Madge (and Dick) and what went into forming the personality we see at the beginning of the CS books, rather than just provide a preqeul to the CS.

It looks from the GGBP website as if Rosalie Dene features strongly in it, which is nice. She's one of the few characters who play an important role practically throughout the entire series, but she never really gets to be right at the centre of the action - except for one plot in Highland Twins, which isn't finished off properly!

According to the website Madge, Joey and Grizel are already at the Tiernsee. So no, not Madge's last term. As Alison says it seems to feature -Rosalie and Mary (Burnett) and hints at what is happening at the new CS. Not sure if this will be enough to persuade me to buy it. If I do, it will be make sure that I have a complete set of fill-ins.

I'm a bit dubious about this one. The last prequel was a nice adventure story but little to do with the CS - you could have happily substituted any other names and it would have made no difference to the story.
This looks similar - a school story using some familiar names but otherwise little connection
