For no very good reason, I was looking at Alfred Miles' 1905 compilation 52 Stories for Girls. Imagine my surprise to find one of the stories is titled "The Story of Grizel Cochrane" ....

According to Wikipedia, Grizel is a figure from 17th century Scottish lore, who disguised herself as a man and twice robbed the postman in order to delay the execution of her father:

Quote:
She threatened the man with instant death, and so terrified him that she obtained possession of the papers he carried. As she had foreseen, this delay in the execution gave time for friends in London to raise a ransom, so the heroic girl saved her father and made her name famous in Scottish legend.

Sounds like our Grizel! The Miles story mentions a "Sidney and Lord Russell", too, and describes our heroine as "only at that period eighteen years old; she had, however, a natural strength of character, that rendered her capable of a deed which has caused her history to vie with that of the most distinguished of heroines".
