Having just read Cornelia, I was vaguely aware of OH flicking through the TV last night when he came across a programme on Yesterday called Underground Worlds. It had just got to a bit about someone discovering new caves while lighting an existing cave for the visit of the Austrian Emperor, which made me sit up and take notice!

Here's the link to the caves website:

That must have been such a stunning discovery - I wonder whether EMBD could have read about it, as it was early 19th century, so could even have been in an encyclopaedia by the time of her childhood.

I've been there :D . It was the first day of a tour of Slovenia and Croatia, and none of us had any small change in local currency, and this ferocious communist-era woman wouldn't let us into the toilets unless we paid the exact amount! Not a problem that CS people ever had ...

But very common across Eastern Europe before (and indeed for a while after) the Fall of Communism Alison! The thing that always got me was the doling out of individual sheets of toilet paper by similar fearsome Czech women. And the total absence of keys in the loo locks!
