Hello everyone,
Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere already but I came across this Flikcr album and it's fascinating!
I read in some other threads that the general consensus is that the Alpenhof may have been EBD's real life Chalet location.... Maybe we could pool together and buy this incredible piece of time stood still..

What an amazing collection of photos Hanna. I'm going to explore it in minute detail later. I feel a dolls house coming on.....

Yes, it's the details that are so compelling - most people would just put up views of the building and perhaps general views of a room or two. Thanks, Hanna, and what an amazing introductory post!

What a lovely idea ... then we could all go there for meet-ups. Not the Joey sort with dividing into teams and going on hikes, though  .

Preferably not - the wine and cake version sounds far more enjoyable

What a fascinating find Hanna, thanks for posting it

Ah you're all welcome, but seriously if that is The place then can't we look into the idea of having a trust or something to buy it...

I believe there is a law in Pertisau that land can only be purchased by the locals. We would also be unlikely to be able to raise the millions it would take to renovate and maintain the building. It is an enormous location. I would also imagine that there are a lot of issues with trying to start a school in that location - it wouldn't be anything like as easy as Madge apparently found it.

(And then there are those (like me) who don't think that's the actual site of the building anyway... )

Even if it were the right place, it's a huge amount of work/ responsibility to own/ manage a property of that kind - and can easily run into complications, as the Museums Association recently reported is the case with the Brontë Society, which runs the Parsonage Museum at Haworth.

'Tis pleasant to dream though...

Oh... I've always harboured a dream to buy a small chalet for my retirement. :(

What wonderful photos though. I've taken many of the outside, but to see the inside is fascinating. I felt it was likely the location as it is large enough to be a school and you can imagine the girls putting their "plumeaux" over the balcony. The other reason that makes it likely is it is never mentioned in the books.

I think the idea's to stop wealthy people from buying places in attractive locations as holiday homes and pushing up prices so that local people can't afford to get on the property ladder. Not a bad idea given the problems which that sort of thing's causing in some parts of the UK, but it'd scupper Joey's plans of buying Die Blumen :D .

You could always rent one! And I might be wrong, although I thought I remember reading it somewhere when I was there.

I've seen it somewhere as well. It's not a bad idea: there seem to be a lot of problems in "scenic" parts of the UK with locals being priced out of the property market.

I rather like the thought of a group of locals staging a protest against Joey and Jack buying Die Blumen :D.

Around where I live local resentment is mainly aimed at English people who buy a holiday home - which is then unoccupied nearly all the time. We (as 'incomers') have been made really welcome.

Joey's holiday homes in Yorkshire and Briseau are another matter though...

I think the law applies to the whole of the Austrian Tirol. I remember a colleague at work telling me about it.

Just looked it up- seems to apply to holiday homes rather than permanent ones
