Driving through Pertisau this evening, it strikes me that one thing that has never changed for the region is the fact that their financial success is dependent on the weather. In the time EBD describes, it was all about the coming of winter - an early and long winter made things difficult because there would be no work.Nowdays, if the weather is bad in summer, or if winter is late to come, hotels and guesthouses stand empty. Most places close down completely from mid-October to mid-December, and most likely also from April to mid-May. That is a long stretch of time not to have an income. It's fascinating how things don't change much even a century later...

It used to be like that in the town a grew up in. A bad summer meant a bad year as so many businesses depended on the summer tourists to stay afloat for the rest of the year

Yes, the very first time we went was in April and a lot of places were shut or undergoing maintenance. We stayed at the "Post" and the receptionist remarked it was a strange time to visit - too late for ski season, too early for rambling.

We've learned since, our next trip is January - SLOC has taken to cross-country skiing (langlauf) and wants to do biathlon this year

A couple of times, we visited Pertisau in October when we were on an ice dance course just over the border in Germany - totally dead, everywhere closed, no trains or boats running.....
