Hi! I've been very inactive for a while, so please forgive me for jumping straight back in with a question.

In a couple of weeks time, we're going to Wengen. I've not really stopped and given it enough thought - except to realise that, actually, a day trip to Schaffhausen isn't as ealistic from there as I'd hoped, due to oddities of trains.

So, here's my question - if you were in Wengen for a week, what would you do?

Wengen a lovely spot - I was there around five years ago in summer.

I would definitely recommend a trip on the train to the top of the Jungfrau. It leaves quite early from Lauterbrunnen. If you have a Swiss railcard you get a discount (although it is still an expensive trip!) make sure you take a warm jacket as it is cold up there.

You also have the Staubbach falls which are a lovely walk along the valley.

The Jungfraujoch trip features in Chalet School Librarian and the Staubach falls also feature in one of the books.

It is possible to do day trips to Lucerne and Bern as well (both are gorgeous towns in their own right).

I would also recommend a day trip to Lausanne and, perhaps, the steamer from there over to Evian in France.

There is a marvellous Museum close to Brienz with all sorts of Chalets from various parts of Switzerland (think somewhere like Beamish or St Fagans in Wales or Weald and Downland in Sussex, that sort of place). If you have the railcard for the area the boat is free to Brienz from Interlaken or at least it was last time I was there. Just googled it and the Museum is at Ballenburg.

Also at Brienz, there is a little railway that takes you up the Rothorn mountain. Some trains are steam powered. Unfortunately it was misty when we went but the view is supposed to be stunning....

The Jungfrau trip is highly recommended

If you visit Lausanne, you're only a few minutes by local train from Montreux which is also nice.

There's Interlaken itself, too. There's an interesting, if small, Alpine Museum there. Then, if you are feeling adventurous, you could go to Murren, via Lauterbrunnen and Grutschalp, either walking or catching a train to Murren. From Murren, you can get up the Schilthorn on the cable car. You could also go over the top through Kleine Schiedegg to Grindelwald, which would open up a whole new valley, including the best views of the North Face of the Eiger. If you're a really good/keen walker, you can go to Grindelwald, get the cable car up to First, follow the trail past the Bachalpsee and the Faulhorn to Schnygge Platte, come down the cog railway to Wilderswil and so back to Lauterbrunnen and Wengen. Alternatively, you can cut that walk off at the Faulhorn and come down to Bussalp, from which there is either a cable car or a bus back to Grindelwald.

Thankyou so much! My four year old absolutely loves waterfalls, so we'll definitely make it to the Staubbach falls.

We're actually spending a week in Vaud too, so we might go to Lausanne from there. I think we change train at Lausanne on the way out.

I feel much more prepared now, anyway. Previously our list of ideas only read 'Jungfrau' and we leave today. Oops!
