GGBP are publishing Beechy of the Harbour School, Nesta Steps Out and A Leader in Spite of Herself as a 3-in-1. Is it worth forking out £13 on?

I don't own copies of any of them. I know I read Beechy years ago and, to put it mildly, it wasn't my sort of thing. Quote mentioned in archived CBB discussion - "She knew then that, all too soon, life would alter for her and had determined that, wherever she had to go, she would be God’s little messenger" ... as she was unpacking her trunk on arrival at school. I think I've read the other two, but they clearly made such a huge impression on me that I can't remember anything about them.

Part of me thinks they might be worth getting for the sake of completeness, especially as they seem to be so expensive to buy elsewhere. But part of me thinks that I might actually need someone to pay me to read Beechy again, and that the other two may well be similar, and that £13 could be better spent on other books.

Anyone know these books well enough to give advice :D ?

I've not read "Beechy" but I don't think that the other two are as sick-making as the quotation that you mention!

Having said that, they are definitely "Evangelical" and a lot weaker than even the lesser EBD such as "Feud in the Fifth Remove" and "New Housemistress". I feel they are "read once" books.

They aren't books that I would recommend to anyone. There are a lot better GO out there in terms of value-for-money. The only real reason for buying them would be completeness.

I think you should buy them for the sake of completeness Alison. Better to be looking at them than looking for them. If you work out the cost per title as they are being published as a three in one it works out at £4.33 per title. I think this will be a one time chance to get these three titles so cheaply. I will be getting them for the sake of completeness and also to satisfy my curiosity.

I have come to the conclusion that sometimes it's best just to buy something rather than waste time constantly agonizing about whether to buy or not.

Consumerism has done a good job on me, clearly.

Did someone on the Finishing School do a live read of Beechy or did I imagine it? I have to admit most of the stand alone books don't really appeal to me, particularly the idea of the religious ones as I am very much not religious.

Not sure if Beechy was done - certainly either the Little Marie Jose or the other short historical whose name escapes me - whichever had 'Sexy Seth' in!

Ah yes, Sexy Seth! Can't remember which one that was, but I think I enjoyed the read through more than I would ever enjoy the book.

The Little Marie Jose was definitely done which may be the one I am thinking of.

I think Sexy Seth was in The Little Missus.

The Little Maria Jose's the one in which the heroine's dad strips naked to climb through a prison window.

Moving swiftly on ...

Little Missus! Yes, that's it of course - always get confused between the two 'Little' this or that!

I'll give these a miss. Let's just say I'm not their target audience and I find the Swiss CS books preachy enough. That Beechy one sounds horrible. Though I can understand buying them if you're an EBD collector in general.

I’m actually beginning to like the sound of “The Little Marie Jose” and “The Little Missus” from Alison’s description of them. They sound very un EBD like. I’m looking forward to GGBP publishing them. They are going to do them as a two in one book when they get around to it.

That’s why this board is so great. You get titbits like Alison’s description of the heroine’s dad’s antics in “The Little Marie Jose” that make you go Whaaaat? I didn’t even know that EBD had written any books other than the CS until I found this board.

There's a very good synopsis by Elder in Ontario of The Little Missus in Recommendations - viewtopic.php?f=20&t=14032

The NCC site has good synopses of all the rarer (and not so rare!) titles, too ...

I've only read Beechy once, and found her a most improbably heroine! I do like Leader, very much, much more grounded in the real world; I haven't read Nesta, so will reserve judgement.
