Was it only me who was completely baffled at the weird sport Gerry had been allowed to play before she went to school?
La Grace?
On and off for ages I tried to find out what on earth it could be and suddenly this weekend I found out. The American Civil War Museum even sells a La Grace, or Game of Graces set.
https://acwm.org/product/civil-war-era-game-of-graces/

It looks as though you could play it with an embroidery hoop and two sets of chunky knitting needles.
Apologies if you all knew this already.

I've been to that museum, years ago, but I don't remember a game called La Grace being mentioned  .

Wikipedia's got some info:

here

I can't remember wondering what Gerry played, though, so that bit must just have passed me by!

I have the kind of brain that focuses on minute details but fails to notice the big picture. Not always ideal.

Well, bless my socks! I've played this.

Many, many years ago I was shown how to play by a lady who I think of as being very old (but see discussion on Mlle Lapattre's age...she was probably younger than I am now) who had played it when she was young (ie about the age I was at the time). I don't remember being very good at it. Perhaps if I had perservered, I would have acquired some much-needed grace.

Wow! Really? You should probably write a scholarly paper about it.

It looks sort of fun, and you could probably play it in a long frock without any difficulty, but I had absolutely never heard of it before reading Gerry.

I wonder if the March girls (Little Women) might have played it. Seems their sort of thing although Wikipedia says early 1800s. Except see Victoria, evidently some people carried on playing.

Yes, it seems like the sort of the thing Meg and Amy might have played with Kate and Grace Vaughn  .
