Yes, then having difficulties because of the need to be, not so much selfish, but self-concerned and pushy in order to get on, which is at odds with the way she's been brought up.

My wife just bought this for me in a charity shop, and though I'd never have actively bought it, as I wasn't particularly interested in non CS EBD, it was a lovely surprise (especially for £2.50 !) to have a hardback EBD.

I am only halfway though but am enjoying this little world, it's interesting seeing the ways ideas that later come up in CS start off here. I quite like the characters too, though I want to push Philomela off something high for being so melodramatic and weedy!!

It takes a little bit of concentration to begin with, with Phillipa Phyllidia, Philomela, Philomena, Philidelphia all in one family ! It is surprising how quickly that does resolve so you know just who is who, after the first bit though.

ETA edited the older one's names as realised I'd remembered them wrong as they don't turn up much in the story!

And the parents are Phillip and Phyllis - I do love EMBD letting herself have a real good go with unusual names, though, and it's not even that unusual to have a number of pupils with unusual names. These things often go in clusters - writes she, who was at school with girls whose names inluded Jeeta, Robinetta, Bonita, Guelda, Janella, Terene, Marjolein, Corrie...

I also think that the story of the Nethecotes and their wicked patriarch is infinitely superior to that of the disreputable Dai Lloyd, ancestor of the Christy family!
