I think the argument for Grizel getting the job despite running off to the Falls of Rhine was because she didn't do it in term time. That and Madge thought it would help her become a better person (and from a plot POV she's more important than Anne). It still does seem unfair though. Unfairness in the CS always jars because usually it's so much fairer than places like Malory Towers or Kingscote.

Also, while Matron Besly is a petty egomaniac, and I'm not surprised the kids prank her, she is right to point out that Joey is naturally pale anyway and it's not exactly going to be obvious to her that Joey is ill. Matey has known Joey for ages, Matron Besly hasn't. Speaking of Joey, it was impressive that she managed to keep calm when Matron Besly was slagging her off in front of the other girls and telling her how stuck up she was. I know she loses her temper later but I think even Frieda would have lost it if she'd had a matron constantly having a go at her over stupid made-up rules.

Matey is ridiculous there. How was Matron Besly supposed to know that Jo had toothache? She wasn't a mind reader.

It's one of those books - Eustacia is another - in which none of the staff handle things very well. Matron Besly shouldn't have had such a go at Jo, or made up her own rules, but either Matey or Miss Wilson should have explained her duties and their limits to her properly.

I suppose Margot could have had enough of depending on men after what happened with her husband hence the reason she was happy to work.. I wonder if Margot dying and also Ted had anything to do with EBD already plotting Robin and Daisy going to live at Jo's after she married? Such a better story if Ted and Margot had got together.

I am apt to dismiss this book but it did have a lot of good stuff and the orchestra was genuinely funny.

Sorry if this has answered before, but why is Ilonka told not to play Gretchen am Spinnrad? Is the content of the song too adult for her and if so, why was Joey singing it in front of a group of kids? Unless 'you can't play that' meant that Ilonka isn't good enough to play the piece.
I'd always read it as the piece being technically too difficult for Ilonka, and Googling suggests the same - lots of different strands to keep separate-but-unified, apparently.

Thanks, that explains a lot. I'm not familiar with the piece so wasn't sure.
