What a wonderful thought! Not Anna being interned, but Anna living happily ever after with Tom Evans ... although Joey might well then have made Robin stay at home, unless she'd found a woman who was above the age for compulsory war work to be her "help" .

Removing Anna from the scene is certainly an interesting idea, but I suspect that Alison is right and that Joey would have found somebody else (though presumably they would have suffered from the same flaws as the other Welsh servants that the school is forced to take on and been less satisfactory than their Austrian predecessors).

How did Anna escape being interned when Frieda and others didn't?

What was the criteria for the Government locking people up?

Very confusing judging by what happened to my parents and their friends, nearly all Jews and nearly all fleeing from the Nazis in Czechoslovakia. Some were interned, some not. No obvious difference between them.

Internment was a mess.

Originally, the people being interned were those that were perceived as a risk. People who were deemed to be refugees from Nazi Germany - mainly Jews - were not interned.

Then the Government panicked when Italy entered the war and suddenly every "enemy alien" regardless of how long they had been in the UK or whether they were clearly fleeing prosecution was "rounded up". However, enforcement remained patchy, and men were more likely to be interned than women.

Internment was met by public outcry and parliamentary pressure, and many internees were released quite quickly. Internment was, once again, only for those people who posed risks.

In "Goes To It", the arbitrary nature of the internment (Frieda is interned but Wanda/Marie are not) is clearly illustrated as is the Government's change of mind. I suspect Anna arrived as a "sponsored" refugee and was under the protection of the Great Doctor...

Edit: "Persecution" that should have been. Not "prosecution"

An Annaless Maynard home would have been very interesting!

During the war, there's be a dearth of suitable servants because of people doing war work, or other jobs vacated by men. Even without that, I don't think they'd be finding many faithful servants willing to do as much as Anna did as cheerfully and uncomplainingly - housekeeping, cooking, laundry, childcare for multiple children, entertaining random hordes of schoolgirls at short notice, Joey's frequent long-term guests.

Anna was, at least at first, stuck with the Maynards, as a foreign national from an enemy country with (possibly) not very fluent English. She couldn't tell them to stuff it and walk out. I suspect a lot of her replacements *would* - they'd find out how much they were expected to do, and quickly find other employment at better pay. The ones who stuck around would be of the unsatisfactory variety.

As a result, the Maynards would be forced to hire sufficient staff at market rates with decent leave time - at least a full time nanny plus a housekeeper/cook. Lemon biscuits and the housekeeper volunteering to take the babies out for a walk during her break would be given up. Joey would need to prioritize her time more - using the nanny time for her writing, for example, so she's free to look after the kids when the nanny is off. (In a fair world, so would Jack, but that's not how things worked then).

I think that would dampen her enthusiasm for giant families - after Charles, the rate of adding children (and adopting random strays) would decrease significantly, and the family would only extend by a couple more kids.

Maybe Grandma Learoyd (whom Gay and Jacynth met on the train) had a like-minded friend who could have worked for Joey: younger women would have been doing some sort of war work. She'd soon have told Joey what was what :D .

What if the Maynard triplets were boys?

I wonder how Joey's involvement in the school would have played out if Felicity was her first daughter.

I could see her sending her sons to the Chalet School Kindergarten but, after that, they'd have had to move on to a boys' school. Would Joey have been as involved with the Chalet School or would she have transferred her attention to her sons' school? Would the Maynards have moved to Switzerland with seven sons either at or due to attend school in England or would they have stayed in Britain and sent Felicity to the Chalet School when she was old enough?

Abbeybufo's written a drabble about that, in which the CS becomes co-ed to accommodate the Maynards :D.

Was just going to say the same thing. Jo's Boys by Abbeybufo covers that idea, only with the triplets being boys. It's excellent, and she needs to create more of it some stage... Pretty please?
