Was there actually such a thing as teacher training then?

I'm not sure what else the staff could have done really. They have introduced tri-ligualism by this time, so it would be very hard to get a teacher who met those requirements. And it is supposed to be temporary - they're lucky Joey happens to be around.

I'm sorry that Frieda gets pushed out. She was originally supposed to be helping at the school as well, but she got dragged off home because Tante Luise had hurt her ankle so she was "needed". It was an apartment, not a mansion, and by then Gottfried and Bernhilda both had their own homes, and Grossmutter had died a few years earlier. How much mess and laundry did Herr Mensch, Frau Mensch and Tante Luise generate between them that meant that Frau Mensch and Gertlieb couldn't manage for a few weeks?!

I suppose Frieda was pushed out because the book was all about Jo helping out and being magnificent. But it does show what 'helping at home' really meant. No wonder the girls married young.

I think this book gave a bit of 'closure' to Jo. She was so reluctant to leave school and couldn't imagine not being part of the daily life of the CS. But when she returned there as not quite pupil, not quite teacher, she realised that life moves on and she had to move with it.

She was actually relieved when quarantine was lifted and she was able to return to her family at Die Rosen. School had been fun for her when all her friends were there and she was still a schoolgirl. But now it was time to leave that behind and begin the process of growing up.

Of course, she never fully left her schooldays behind, but she did stop pining for them in this book which was a big step forward.
