Thanks everyone, I was unexpectedly sprung from the joint this evening (had horrible visions of being in until Tuesday what with the long weekend) so going to my mum's for a couple of days. I'll do the Exile thread on Monday.

So, what did you think of this book? Do you agree with EBD giving the Headship to Miss Annersley? What do you think of the merge with St Scholastika’s? Thoughts on the Mystic M and their deeds, and their tragic conclusion? Did you like the trip to Salzburg?

This was actually the first CS book I read - my dad bought me the Armada paperback in a library sale! To be quite honest, I didn't 'get' it at all. I couldn't work out why there were so many random adults cluttering up a perfectly good school story, I couldn't work out what or who 'The Robin' was and why there was an 'Annexe'. It's also worth mentioning that Armada made a real mess of the cuts in this book; for example, a massive song and dance is made out of introducing Elizabeth and Betty and then they vanish for the rest of the book! But I liked Hilary and the Mystic M (although, being an irritatingly literal child, I felt it was very unlikely that all these kids' names would begin with M!).

Interesting that you found the adults superfluous - I suppose CS books do have more adults as significant characters than some school stories.

New CS is always supposed to have very minor cuts/ updates, but I always think it unbalances the books to publish them as two separate parts, as was done here. Better than really extensive cuts, I suppose...

I hope you continue on the mend Aquabird. Have you managed to avoid Matey with the caster oil?
