Inspired by KB's lovely nationalities post, I thought I'd put some some lists I compiled of professions in the CS world. I'll put lists for fathers, mothers, girls and husbands in separate posts.

I've included all students of the Chalet school (all branches), plus St Hilda's and St Scholastica's, plus the major female characters of the La Rochelle book families (Trevennor, Challoner, Atherton, Temple, Raphael, Shakespeare, Willoughby, Ozanne), and the students of the school in Monica Turns Up Trumps. For husbands, the mistresses are also included. For the fathers and mothers, guardians are also included.

The list of professions includes careers that were actually followed, plus any plans girls had (even when they changed their minds), plus EBDisms. As a result, some people are listed more than once. Women are only listed under titled or landowner when it comes from them, rather than their husband. Military service is only included if it was not specifically during the war.

The general categories are Business, Banking, Law, Medicine (doctors, nurses, matrons), Religion (ministers, missionaries, social work, nuns), Military (including merchant captains and explorers), Academic (research or teaching at a university level), Artistic (art, music, drama, etc), Landowner/Farmer ((owns properties which provide an income, or a major farm), Agriculture (farming, gardening, animal work, without owning the property), Other Professional (engineer, journalist, accountant, etc), Secretary, Titled, Service (servants, shop clerks), Hospitality (tour guides, hotel work), Education (teacher, tutor), War Work, Returning Home, Home to Help (same as previous, but with a specific job).

Girls marked with * are from St Mildreds, Scholasticas or Hildas, and with ^ are Rochelle/Tie In girls.

I'm so impressed by all the work that people put into these lists!

Like KB's post, this is fascinating!

I have a query - should Lavender Leigh's aunt not also be artistic (writer) as she was only undertaking war work because she had to?

Not wishing to criticise, but wasn't Katherine Gordon's father a doctor? I thought the missionary was the father of Mary-Kate, who never actually comes to the Chalet School. Very impressive list, by the way!

An amazing list and such diversity but one minor query - wasn't Biddy's father a sergeant rather than a captain?

A wonderful list and represents a great deal of hard work on your part, Jennifer - thank you so much for putting it together.

Question for the Special Sixth mods: would it be possible to have both this list, and KB's equally fascinating geographical one 'stickied' at the start of the section? Firstly because I think they deserve the prominence, and secondly because it would make it so much easier for the rest of us to refer to them.

Tom Gay (doctor-medical dispenser)

Tom wasn't training to be a doctor, was she? She was gong in for missionary work - she mentions theological college. Nowadays, she'd be an ordained (CofE) minister of religion.

It's interesting how solidly middle class the CS was, with the vast majority drawn from the professions, business, academia and the arts or the military. And there might have been fewer military if not for the two word wars. Ernest Howell was only in for the duration, for one, and I'm not sure about Tommy Lambert.

They have quite a few aristocrats in Tyrol - the von Eschenaus, the von Rothenfels, Thekla, the le Cadoulecs, and obviously Elisaveta. And they have more people from the trading middle-classes as well. But, after that, it's mostly people from the professional middle-classes.

Interestingly, EJO went the other way, and brought in more and more titled characters.

I may have missed it in this immense and amazing list, but wasn't Heather Raphael's father titled, in the military and a land owner? (Heather Leaves School).

Corrections and additions are welcome!

I don't think Major Raphael is titled - he's referred to exclusively as Major. He is under landowner and military, though.

Tom goes through a variety of career choices before settling on missionary, so that's why she's under doctor.

I have the Gordons as medical missionaries.

Ernest Howell stays in the military for a few years after the war - he retires in Changes. I put Tommy Lambert as career military based on his rank at the time.

I wonder if it would be better moved to 'Joey's Trunk' which tends to be a resource forum for lists such as this ... I'll do whichever people think is best practice...

I was simply looking for a way to preserve both this list and KB's somewhere readily accessible to the rest of us. If Joey's Trunk would be the best place for them, Abbeybufo, then I'm happy for them to be moved there.

I don't drabble and I hardly ever visit Joey's Trunk and I won't be the only one so there could be less discussion and exchange of ideas.

Which is why I didn't just move it. Reference threads, which this looks as if it is turning out to be, are generally there - i.e. lists of everyone's birthday - but I agree that the heading/explanation of the forum isn't particularly welcoming for anyone who doesn't drabble. On the other hand, it is possible to move a thread, but keep a 'shadow' thread in the original place, so people could find it in both, and I'd be happy to do that, too.
