Having just read Gillian Of for the first time, I have to say how much I enjoyed it. It fits so nicely into the series and has just the right amount of incidents and everyday happenings. I particularly enjoyed the development of Joyce and the strain between her and Miss Norman; perfectly believable and understandable in the circumstances. The play was also fresh and yet very in keeping with those before and after.

What does everyone else think?

Agree with Peg's comments - a very enjoyable book. The relationship between Joyce and Miss Norman is very realistic - both embarrassed for very different reasons - and with no real solution. I was never convinced that Jack and Jane could become close friends after the bullying episodes - this storyline is much more believable.

Gillian has always been a favourite of mine and she is so straightforward and caring. The scene where she and Joyce said farewell to their mother was very touching - I admit I had a tear in my eye.

Only in CSland could a parent be prepared to pay another year of school fees at the drop of a hat for his daughter to be Head Girl! I know Hilary is only just seventeen and can "afford to spend another year at School" - lucky her father can too!

I thought at first here we were talking about EBD's book on the Lintons but maybe not as I seem to remember there is a non EBD book about Gillian which I have not read.

I like the book about the Lintons though and the very different characters of Gillian and Joyce. It is also the first CS book where we see Jo on an equal footing with Jack when they drive to the station to meet the Linton girls when they first arrive in Austria.

There's a fill-in - Gillian of the Chalet School by Carol Allen - which is being talked about here

It's one of my favourite fill-ins - as Gillian is one of my favourite CS characters.
