I think it was only the media that called Mark Phillips 'Captain'; shouldn't think he claimed it himself. I've always read that you can't call yourself anything lower ranking than Major though there are references in some post-war books to ex sergeant-majors quietly dropping the 'sergeant'

Captain Humphries clearly used the title as a front for his spying activities - letting the Bolsheviks (who were naturally au fait with the nuances of titles and English snobbery) believe he was simply a bit of a bounder so that they dismissed him without further thought.

Love it!

On a more prosaic and less appealing note, I did notice the other day when looking through Behind the Chalet School that Julian Bainbridge, the father of EMBD's young friend/ adopted sister Hazel, was referred to in a local newspaper as Captain Julian Bainbridge, at a time when he had left the military and resumed his theatrical career. Helen McClelland further commented that Hazel probably inspired the creation of Robin Humphries, so perhaps her father is referenced in there too.

I have a cousin whose initials would have been TCP until someone pointed this out to his parents, whereupon a "John" was hastily added in there....

Lowering the tone -I originally wanted my elder daughter to be Amelia Rose Slade, until I looked at the initials and knew I'd be condemning her to a life of hell at school. So I changed her middle name to Catherine instead.

I was supposed to be Alison Sarah, but then I'd have been ASH
So my sister got Sarah for a middle name instead :D .

Somebody very close to me has the same initials, and whenever I see said initials I itch to add a final E.

My friend's initials were ARG ... then she married a bloke whose surname begins with S, and took his name. So she is now ARS. She hadn't realised until her brother delightedly pointed it out when she got engaged  .

I know a girl who was going to be called Valerie Doris until someone told her parents what the initials would be.

Older Child was (genuinely) going to be called Grizelda, plus another name and then her surname, until we noticed her initials would be GBH. So, we ended up dropping Grizelda and using the former middle name as her first, and only, name. We'd spent so long deciding what to call her that we had our appointment at the registry coming up the following day, and couldn't think of anything else we wanted to use!

Back in the 70s when Portsmouth was going comprehensive, it was planning one single sex school for each gender which were originally going to be Portsea Island Boys' School and...

They became City of Portsmouth Boys and City of Portsmouth Girls in the end.

The ladies' football team when I was a student was called Birmingham University Soccer Team - BUST. That was deliberate. I normally go mad if people refer to football as soccer, but that did make me laugh .

My dad's initials are M R. Causes surprisingly little confusion. Letters after one's name however appear to be a minefield judging by the conversation we MIoSs had last week.
