Not really a mystery but Sybil's friendship with Betsy Lucy is only alluded to in one book and how Sybil is a better person because of this friendship.

Then much later we are told she's always been friendly with Ruth Lamond and Elinor Pennell. I wish EBD had explored these friendships a little bit more.

Cheers,
Joyce

Possibly Sybil's friendship with Betsy was more at home than at school. The families were living near each other on Guernsey and all through the war in Armishire.

Exactly how did Rolf Maynard die?

And what did Jem whisper to Joey in Exile that had her looking so startled?

Cheers,
Joyce

My chronology may be wildly out, but I always thought Jem was telling Jo that Madge was pregnant (with Josette). I mean, she'd never have noticed by herself!

Yers, that was my thought too. Josette gets given several birthdays, think there's one in January and one in March. January would fit, can't remember exactly when Joey and co leave, around June I think, so too soon for Jo to notice, but not too soon for Madge (and Jem) to know.

Josette's originally born in the autumn of 1938, although her birthday does move around a lot , so the chronology would fit ... but they're always so concerned about not "worrying" people that I don't know if Madge and Jem would have wanted to tell Joey at what was already such a stressful time.

Why did Erica Standish's mother name Joey as godmother? What was the rationale? Was there really no one else suitable, and if not, why not?

How did Aunt Luce and Katherine know when the school term would start and what clothes they would need when the letter entering Katherine for the school had not been sent. I would have thought that travel arrangements and clothes lists would not be sent out until the school place was confirmed.

Why did the school change policy so that Katharine didn't have to get the uniform until she was in school? In the previous book Carola goes to great lengths to provide herself with uniform.
Why was Matron suspicious that Katharine was pretending that the trunk (the one containing a teddy) wasn't hers?

How did Emerence Hope cash that cheque that her dad sent? And how much was it? That click she bought for Margot must have cost a fortune.

And why wasn't Emerence allowed to tell anyone that she was leaving?

I assume it was an open cheque and she just took it into a bank. She'd have been able to do so on the trip itself and, although it's not mentioned in the Swiss books, there must have been shopping expeditions (as there were in Tyrol and the Island books) at other times.

Why in School At it's stated Madge would have preferred an English head girl but appointed Gisela anyway. Where did she think a suitable English head girl was going to appear from in a start up school in Austria?!

How they managed the ultra-fast school moves.

Take the move to St Briavals. They find a new school, prepare the new buildings (including things like converting the old coachman's stable and setting up army huts), pack everything at the old school - bedding, kitchen supplies, art, gym and science apparatus, textbooks and two libraries, not to mention 200+ beds and desks and chairs and multiple pianos - ship it by land and then to an island via a relatively small boat and dock, unpack everything and get it ready for the new term. Not to mention arranging for things like delivery of groceries for 300 people (again, to an island), and sending notices and new instructions to all the parents, including those living abroad.

And they do all this between the spring and summer terms!

Not to mention apparently failing to mention it to parents until it'd all been decided. "Dear Mr and Mrs Bloggs. We are moving the school hundreds of miles away, to another country. This will involve your daughter making a very long journey six times a year, make it difficult for her to return home or you to visit her in case of emergency, and mean a vast increase in fees to cover all the costs. Yours sincerely, M D Russell." And about 90% of parents/guardians were fine with this!

I've always wondered how Tom Gay's parents could afford to send her to boarding school since they were "poor"

Parish priests were not well-paid in those days. They still aren't.

A certain edge when she spoke of Mrs Maynard, certainly, but, after all, not everyone could love Joey.
