Mind you, I suppose EMBD would only have sent Jo to Oxford, where she could live in an all female college at that date

Women students at Oxford in the 1930s could, apparently, gatecrash parties at men's colleges, get roaring drunk, and have to be assisted clandestinely back into college by male students. Not that I imagine Jo would have done any of those things. :D

If Jo had studied English, I imagine Miss Lydgate would be quite tolerant, but if she opted for history, I don't suppose Miss Barton would have had any patience with her whatsoever.

Jo seems so immature at the beginning of Exile, even though she's 20 by then. All the other adults, and the Sixth Formers, are understandably anxious about the political situation and the dangers which may lie ahead, but, when Jem raises the subject, Jo laughs and jokes about how it's like being in an adventure novel.

EBD actually makes a point of it, when Jem has the meeting with the staff about moving the school up to the Sonnalpe (and i don't know why Jo was there at all, since she had nothing useful to contribute). Jem says the Dennys will come to Die Rosen. 'Jo groaned loudly'. Very rude, even though the Dennys weren't there, and inappropriate, given how serious the subject under discussion was. 'But no-one took any notice'. I should think there was some eye-rolling going on among some of the staff, though.
