There are so many characters outside of the Russell/Bettany/Maynard clan that I wish took centre stage occasionally. Mine are:

Frieda Mensch - definitely the character from the Tyrol days that I felt deserved more
Vi Lucy - seemed to be a leader until OOAO started at the school and then quickly became a side-kick only
Ros Lilley - barely gets a mention after 'Problem'
Amy Stevens - junior poet genius as an 8 year old and then shipped off to the annex

Who do you wish had more prominence?

I think it's a particular problem in the Swiss years. The school becomes much bigger, and there are so many new girls, most of them fade into the background after their own book.

I agree about Rosamund; I really would have liked to see her reaction to being appointed Head Girl, and how she coped with it. So unfair that she was booted out after one term to move Len in, when Len was going to have another whole year anyway.

Also, Jo Scott - is form prefect in New Mistress (when she shouldn't even have been in Inter V) then just fades away, when she should have been Head Girl instead of Maeve Bettany.

I also like Flavia Ansell. It's a pity the series didn't carry on long enough for her to get into the Sixth; I think she'd have made an excellent Second Prefect.

I wish some of Jack Lambert's Gang had been better developed, too. We don't really get to know any of them other than Jack. With previous groups of friends, we got to know them all quite well.

Going back to the war years, I like Meg Farrant, who made a couple of very brief appearances in Gay. We get quite a lot about her background, then she disappears.

In the Swiss years Francie Wilford is one of my favourite of the more minor characters. She gets a decent story arc, but it occurs gently in the background over multiple books, rather than one book and then fading out. It's also nice to see someone who turns out okay, but isn't instantly cured of her family issues during her first term.

The trio of Janice, Judy and Ailie are ones who it would have been nice to see take centre stage. We get bits of them over a number of years, but they're more background that central characters. And they're a lot more appealing than Jack and Gang as a group, reminding me a bit of Bride and her hear.

In terms of the one-hit wonders, who feature in one book and then fade, seeing more of Carola and/or Katharine would have been nice.

Richenda Fry. Who is obviously prominent in the book named after her and then she just dies off and we don't hear that much about her. Her best friend joins the school and she ends up on the periphery of the triplets' group of friends.

Cheers,
Joyce

I would have liked to see a lot more of Kat Gordon.

Most of the clan get some sort of role, but Primula gets forgotten about, except in Joey Goes. I'd like to have seen more of her at school.

I'm not sure he actually is a minor character but Jem. I know he's around a lot, but mostly in the background.

I wish we had seen more of Vi Lucy and also Clem. I would have preferred Clem as head girl rather than the bland Julie who goes from being not clever at all to brilliantly clever.

Also more of Ted and Rosamund especially at the time when Rosamund was head girl and the reason she left so suddenly and with no explanation.

I would have been happy with less or nothing of Jack Lambert and her ghastly friends and also nothing of Erica. More of Ailie & Co instead.

I know they are Russells but I would have liked more of Madge and Jem and also the older Sybil.

And Julie's only still at school because of her appendicitis the previous year; she shouldn't have been HG at all. But at this point - from Peggy, really - EBD seemed incapable of allowing anyone other than one of the MBR and OCL clans, and Mary Lou, to hold the job. Elinor Pennell, the year before Mary Lou, was the sole exception in getting her full year.

Neither Josette nor Maeve was all that strong as HG, and one gets the feeling EBD was really marking time until Len was old enough.

So I suppose I'd say I'd like to have seen more of anyone outside the two main clans being HG.

:) Agree!

I would definitely like to have seen more of Vi Lucey as a character in her own right, and not simply as Mary Lou's best friend.

I also think Polly and Lalla Winterton could have been interesting, lively characters but after 'Peggy' they moved very much to the background.

Cherry Christie is one I wish we’d seen more of. Sybil, who seems to be punished consistently... she’s an interesting character.

Dickie 'best Head Girl who never was' Christy. Also seconding Rosamund, who is lovely.

Clem would have made a brilliant HG.

I'm surprised Clem wasn't Head Girl. Maybe EBD was keen to stick to the MBR or La Rochelle clans, but I wouldn't have thought it was ideal to make Julie Head Girl, even though she was presumably older than the others because she was having to repeat a year, when she'd just had months off ill and was supposed to be studying hard.

I always wondered if Julie was given the peritonitis story so that she would have to stay down and become HG. In the early books like Highland Twins she was the leader of that gang and then Bride seemed to ascend and become important.

I would like to have seen more of Rosamund,as Head Girl and the reason she left.I think EBD was just in such a hurry to get Len as head girl that she just got rid of her without any thought which was annoying.

I agree, Nyota. She always seemed a very sturdy, interesting character and much more use could have been made of her - as, indeed, also applies to her sister Dickie. I like their father too!!! Even if he did want Hilda to cane Emerence...

I would love to know more about Lilamani - her back story, how she came to the CS, what she felt about it and how she progressed. As it is, she is just used to show how Lavender has improved in character.

I wonder if Julie was made head girl in the first Swiss book to bring continuity after the move? Probably after the M/B/R clan, the Guernsey families were the most prominent in the series at that stage.

EBD was also very keen on the Guernsey people at this time - a book about Barbara featuring Beth, Vi playing a prominent role etc. It was about then that she also published the last of the La Rochelle books.
