I've just ordered a book about various people who meet on a train, and was trying to think of the people whom the CS gang meet on trains.

1. James H Kettlewell – proposes to Madge.
2. Frau Berlin.
3. Jem Russell – helps after the train crash in which Madge rescues Frau Berlin. The rest is history!
4. Mad professor – turns out to be an expert on salt mines, and known to Friedel von Gluck.
5. The Stuffer and Maria – keep in touch and send Joey an expensive wedding present.
6. Klara Melnarti's dad – later sends his daughters to the school.
7. Frau Eisen (?) and her son – apparently become suspicious of the CS girls after hearing Giovanna criticise the Nazis.
8. The Thirlbeck family – help Gay when she runs away.
9. Nell Randolph – turns out to be Hilda's long-lost cousin, becomes friendly with Peggy, also friendly with Kathie Ferrars.
10. Sir Guy and Nina Rutherford – Sir Guy gets such a great impression of Vi, Hilary, Lesley etc that he sends Nina to the school a few months later!
11. A group of "mods" – criticised by Joey for being scruffy and dirty!

That doesn't seem like many people, considering how many train journeys are made! Who (whom, even) have I missed? So many authors in the first half of the 20th century used rail journeys as a way for people for meet, or to introduce baddies.

The train accident where Joey adopts clare. I know not an actual meeting; but does that count?

Emma, I can't believe I forgot Claire  . Meeting a future husband on a train isn't that unusual in books, but randomly adopting a child you meet on a train definitely is!

Is Claire the same journey as the scruffy mods? That's Joey and Erica, maybe before the crash?

Ha ha! Especially as Joey did always like the name Claire. I've always thought that plot device over the top so she could have the said child.

Hang on a minute - Nillie and her friend on the train with Joey and Erica in Summer Term are beatniks, not mods, and Joey does actually say so. Mods were the epitome of smartness!

Yeah, well! I don't suppose EMBD would've cared for mods either, if you come to that! Far too vain and dandified...

Don't forget that most of the time CS girls were travelling in their own compartments so would have no chance to meet others.

Kathy Ferrars meets Biddy for the first time at the train station and then Sharlie and Peggy Burnett after. Does that count even though it's not random?

And this one isn't random, either, but surely one of the most poignant scenes on a train is when Copper and her stepfather travel by train to Besançon and she has to get off and leave him there without looking at or saying goodbye to him.

I was just going to point out that there's no way they were Mods. Being married to one, who seems to believe he is still living in that era, I can say for sure he is far closer to the 'vain and dandified' end of the scale than the scruffy end :D :D

Oh yes, once a Mod, always a Mod, in a good many cases! Or there are at least giveaway things like shoes and haircuts...

My favourite train encounter is Father and Grandma. It’s one of my favourite scenes with travelling to school

And Gay and Jacynth also accept sweets from strangers which I was always told never to do.

It is also one of the rare instances of a CS girl being rude in public. Grandma wants a corner seat which is clearly the comfortable one and Jacynth starts to get up to give it to her. Gay stops her by saying they were there first.

Maybe not the same as train encounters but we also get a few train scenes in Joey Goes to the Oberland.

Evadne and her father bumping into Joey and family at the quayside and then settling them onto the Paris train. Andre meeting them from the same train (I cannot remember if Simone was also there) with chauffeur in tow and then a couple of days later Andre driving the Maynard family and Anna and Primula through the French countryside to the train that would take them to Switzerland and their new life. They were met in Swizerland by Jack who took them to Frieda and her family and home.
